Like many, I wantd darling to stay, ATM I think weve had the better deal, and even more dangerous looking attacking at corners etc.
Chances are when its all done and he looks back at his career old darling may be kicking himself for jumping ship.

In the ideal world we had both, now THAT would be a genuine danger in the penalty box

If we had Darling, Burgess, Cabango and Casey as our four center halves this season we would have been different mustard. Santos was admittedly signed primarily as squad cover but still

Darling showed leadership at a time when the players looked lost and rudderless, mesmerically watching Grimes passing the ball to Fulton who passed the ball to Grimes who passed the ball to Fulton ad infinitum. I'll always respect him for the effort and passion he put in during those dark days. However, he played hardball in order to maximise his pay packet (nothing wrong with that) and chose to leave us so we'll never know if he could have been another Ash for us, or even a Monk or a Tate.

Of course, his passion and drive could have been driven by the fury of knowing that the actual sequence was Grimes passing the ball to Fulton who passed the ball to Grimes who passed the ball to Fulton until one of them passed the ball to Darling with an opposition striker lurking nearby.

I always felt like Darling was the on pitch incarnation of Martin. Always turned up for the derby, put a little tackle in early then do a lion roar to the crowd to get them going and get them onside.

But then a week later when we're playing, say, Blackburn, switch off at a corner, or get rolled by one of the smallest players on the pitch and we concede. As would happen periodically throughout the season.

He did some good stuff for us, mainly a threat at corners, but I never entirely took to him. Never felt we couldn't replace him defensively. And it certainly looks that way.
