Drama at West Ham.

Ok, again my question still stands though. How many actual instances?

I thought of a couple more. Bolton had a goal that went over the line in 1998 but it wasn't given and Everton stayed up as a result. Henry handball to put Ireland out of World Cup. After that I am struggling though.

So in 36 years watching football I can only think of two, maybe three clangers that cost teams something big. Was it really worth catching those for the VAR shambles we've got now? No way. Not for me.
Joe facking Jordan 🤬

I don’t know, I don’t keep count and I certainly don’t have the mental capacity to remember such things. Also, our respective definitions of ‘big game’ will differ as it’s subjective; I would argue that playing for a spot one place higher up the Premier League table is big as it’s worth a large sum of prize money. Some might not.

What we are agreed on is that aspects of VAR are a shambles. Perhaps where we are disagreeing is whether to bin it off completely, or to persevere under better guidelines and common sense rules.

I remember that one world cup where they actively punished grappling during corners
England had like 3 penalties in 4 games if I remember correctly

It is a blight on the sport that needs brave and consistent refereeing to deal with
There is a difference between a contact sport and a judo royal rumble every time a corner is taken

For me Refs in the Championship are much better than in the Premiership on decisions at corners .
We see teams overloading the 6 yard box with inswinging corners ,
They appear to me any grappling or blocking they give a free kick .

Premiership refs should penalise the first offence then you wouldn't have everything that follows .

This season we have scored and conceded at corners , i don't remember any fouls on Vigs who is very good in the 6 yard box .

Cardiff penalty in the 2-2 draw at Ninian Park, daylight robbery that was , we were cheated, simple as that , penalty for Stoke down here with Madeley the ref . Decisions like those need to be looked at and changed so the right outcome occurs.

I always get the impression they'll do whatever they can to disallow the goal.
This.

Clear and obvious error, clear and f***ing obvious error. Not look for a reason to disallow it because it's a big game. Used properly VAR should hardly ever be used.

Both clear and obvious errors.

Works a treat in every other sport.

If it's obvious why does it take them 5/6 minutes to decide 🤷🏻

The biggest issue for me with VAR is the lack of clarity during the process

In football its against the rules to show contentious issues on replay on the in stadium screens - I remember we have been charged and fined by the FA for showing such a replay once a couple of seasons back

In rugby there is no such thing - in fact its part of the show with VAR

When VAR wants to take a couple of minutes to check a goal or penalty or red card decision, let it be displayed on the screens. Give the crowd something to do other than sit on their arses for several minutes wondering if they can celebrate or not

EDIT:
They also broadcast the conversation between the referee and the video assistant which provides further clarity
There's no need for all the cloak and dagger

Agree 100% with the transparency angle.

If they want to use technology then the conversation should be broadcast live. The half (not sure it’s even that) measure of getting the ref to explain afterwards and then showing the replay is far too manufactured.

If the officials want technology then they’ve got to own it like in all other sports.

I love the way Arse are being defended, all they've done all season is commit fouls at set piece time, anyone see Rice wrestling a west ham player in the box, looked like he was seeking a submission, Trossard was at it as well, masters of the dark arts, it was laughable to see that cretin Arteta screaming and shouting.
Jumping and bouncing about on the touchline with is feet two meters apart fucking nanny goat.

Easily a foul on Raya for me. Arm and shirt being grabbed. I get the argument about West Ham players also being fouled but the reality is that you’ll never be allowed to interact with a goalkeeper in the same way as other players.

Arsenal player did similar in one game and got away with it, goal given.

No opposition players in the 6 yard box is one suggested fix

Another is that the ball is "in play" from the moment the ball is put on the corner quarter circle allowing the ref to watch and blow up for free kicks or penalties before it is crossed into the box

I am curious how much difference the former would make
