Relegation Update

The problem we have when teams are getting closer is that when we play them the games take on a whole new significance pressure wise. From it being just another game , and one we might have been able to afford to lose, it becomes a game we dare not lose. And that applies equally to matches against Plymouth, Hull and Oxford. This brings it's own pressure, on players and fans, and sometimes it can have a positive or negative outcome. I will never forget losing to relegation threatened Southampton and Stoke, both at home, which ultimately condemned us to relegation from the Premier League. Weeks before , everyone was expecting us to get positive results against those two.
I wasn't. I'm not sure anyone was when it came to it. The atmosphere against Soton was funereal and resigned. Stoke didn't matter. If a win had been enough I think we'd have done it, but we needed 7 goals or something. If we go into Oxford needing a win, I wouldn't put tuppence on it, but I don't think we will unless we appoint a shithouse like Carvalhal or Clement.

Don’t know if this has been mentioned but the ref gave Blackburn a penalty in injury time and then swiftly changed his mind and gave Cardiff a free kick instead.

The ref gave a penalty, then the 4th official - having seen the replay on his tablet - intervened and informed the ref that it shouldn't have been a penalty, to which he reversed his decision.... Like I said earlier it's VAR lite and a precedent has been set now. Next time a decision goes against us I hope the bench will be pressuring the 4th official given his new found powers from the touchline

It should never have been a penalty in the first place mind, but fuck em

The Derby and Plymouth games could well be defining games. The club should now be doing everything possible now to get fans into the ground.

This thread was set up to goad our cousins. How ironic would it be if we went down? Its all getting cramped again. Derbys fixtures remaining includes Portsmouth, Luton, Stoke, Hull and Us. Our game v them in a few weeks is taking on huge import.

I didnt realise they were consecutive home games. We have no excuses. Those two games right there are a path to safety.

There should be no pretence within the club, those two games will define the season. Confidence plays a big part, assuming we lose at Leeds we go into the Derby game on a run of three defeats. The build up needs to start now not after the Leeds game

We've played 38 league games and only scored more than 1 goal in 11 of them. 5 of those came in a group of games.
Since the start of the New Year we've played 14 games and only the Blackburn game has had us scoring more than 1

Those glaring facts show how worrying the battle to come is.

Without wishing to be dramatic. It was from about this far out that we managed to get relegated from the Prem, when seemingly safe. When we beat West Ham 4-1, we were all but safe. Unfortunately we got 2 more points all season. We got thumped 5-0 at city and dissolved.(Leeds anyone?) Its the collapse that we need to fear. We are all aware that we are brittle. We have shown recently that we being physically bested in every game. If we lose heart, its over. I agree with 3 Swan that WE have a part to play. The crowd was huge when we stayed up in 03.

It's not about being dramatic it's highlighting that it can happen.
When we got 44 points with 10 games to go it all looked positive.
Closer inspection showed Burnley and Leeds and also Sunderland games where we should show zero points. It

That then leaves 7 games one of those we've lost at Watford..

So taking Leeds and Sunderland out we have 6 games to get 6 points which should make safety, anything less and it's down to the wire.
