I am slightly ashamed to say that I was really surprised by the result. Obviously a brilliant surprise. I’m ashamed that I didn’t put more faith in the people of Caerphilly.
But it is indicative of the way the election was reported up here. Watching English rather than Welsh news led me to genuinely believe it was a completely done deal for Reform. Plaid were only ever spoken about as the likely runner up. All interviews were with people voting Reform who were frequently just unapologetically racist. Or at best, thick as mince.
It also surely shows that on a national level (both Wales and UK), Reform are being significantly overstated in polling. Which gives me heart.
This government are, so far, largely useless (and yes, I voted for them). Their comms are appalling, their mistakes too plentiful and Starmer has the charisma of a potato. But Reform are dangerous. Really, really dangerous. So anyone that can stop them, bring it on. If I was in Wales, I’d vote Plaid all day. Here, I’m not sure any more. I wish the LibDems would do something.
Anyway. Great result.
