PPM for electric vehicles?

Years ago at work I used to claim mileage allowance, I had to keep a work mileage record, writing down start and finish mileage every working day. Records were kept at work and could be checked by HMRC at any time. Possibly this type of system might be a possibility. Obviously the actual mileage of the car could be checked by a visual inspection occasionally by the relevant authorities.

Yes.

And of course a significant percentage of EVs on the road are company vehicles, cars taken through company schemes (salary sacrifice etc where there are incentives for taking EVs), lease fleets and Motability.

Triple lock and winter fuel.

Disability and out of work sickness benefits need completely redoing. Those in genuine need get nowhere near enough and there are large numbers that shouldn’t be getting anything.

Universal credit needs a massive overhaul as well. We are effectively subsidising huge companies who rely on minimum wage jobs to maximise their profits. Those who are looking for work need a higher amount.

I’d cut the amount we spend on defence.

And the NHS requires a massive overhaul. More money needs to go into primary care and nursing and convalescent care which would save huge amounts from the rest of the NHS. The whole system needs digitisation. And we must start actually enforcing rules around non residents using the NHS without payment (I agree with the use of national ID).

I’d raise income tax, reduce NIC (the 8% rate), I’d increase NIC over the UEL, I’d impose an exit tax, and bring in revenue based taxation on the tech giants. I’d also increase VAT on non food online shopping. I’d also reduce the VAT registration threshold. I’d increase the rates of CGT and increase NICs for non PAYE income.
Agree with all of this except defence. I'd like to cut that to, but seems daft in the current climate. Would also introduce a wealth tax, although I would not make it yearly and have it directly attached to infrastructure spending. I'd also make sure an exit tax was more punitive than the wealth tax.

I don’t mind , obviously, spending whatever we have to to keep us safe. Where it gets me really quite angry, is when we participate more than other NATO countries in every single conflict usually in an attempt to appease our ‘special relationship’ friends.

We then pay again as the thousands of refugees who find themselves in desperate situations due to our actions (or at least not helped by our actions) find it far easier to get to us than they do to the US. Afghanistan being an obvious and recent example.

I'm not sure how many folk would agree with me but I honestly wouldn't object to paying a bit more tax to help fund the NHS, education, defence etc but I have little faith in the competence of those in government who are in charge of spending the money. Some of the waste in poorly planned major infrastructure projects, the scandalous amounts of money frittered away during COVID on useless PPE are examples of what can and does happen.

It’s wouldn’t work for a brand new car, anything after the initial 3 years and it’s good to go
Surely it could be made compulsory for all new vehicles to have their mileage recorded on or before the first and second anniversaries of the date of first registration just as it is compulsory to have an MOT on or before the third? Could be done at any filling station equipped with the necessary recording and reporting software and would take seconds.

Absolutely the data is there, the government would just need to introduce a format/system to collect it.

Ah well, let them off then. Job done.

Let them go and take what they want with them. Someone else will take their place, that’s how most of them got there in the first place.

Project fear by those that have. While the rest of us have beans on toast for tea again, and grateful we should be as well.
Spot on here. Call their bluff.

And for the few that do end up going, as the usual doctrine that these people tend to parrot all the time says, "the market will decide". By their own logic they're never tired of chucking down our throats, entrepreneurialism will soon fill the gap, won't it.

It would cost me about £200 pa now I am not working, I don't object but many of the economic reasons for going electric are slowly being eroded.

Therefore this is bound to hit sales of EVs however the Govt have signed an agreement to hit hit a carbon zero target which without EVs is unlikely to be achieved and the very punitive fines will cost whoever is in power a huge amount probably far greater than they raise through this scheme. This together with luxury car tax of £600 or so a year on all cars over £40k will affect both the new and used car market both Ev and ICE.

I intend ro spend a month in July travelling around Europe probably doing 2k miles. How do you record this mileage or should I pay the tolls on european roads and for UK roads even though I am not in the UK?

I would imagine that the cost of collecting this EV poll tax would cost as much as they collect.

Meanwhile many older polluting diesel cars are paying £20 pa VED.

They are also suggesting adding EVs to congestion charge in London which is fair enough but what do the clean air charges in many cities now get called?

Where you going in July, mate? Coming to the Costa Blanca? If so, you must drop in.

Had solar panels and a car charger fitted in September, have my 100% electric Skoda Elroq on order for delivery just before Christmas. I will get a €4,500 government rebate for buying an EV, plus 15% off my annual income tax next year. I anticipate the road tax to be €190 because it's the VRS model. No other taxes apply. I never expect to visit a petrol station again after December. Cushdee.

I am going through France stopping at various places hopefully catching a bit of the Tour then around the Italian Alps into Austria, Germany and back through Belgium into France. No timetable just stopping as and when we like.

I will do a bit of Spain at some stage, been all over the place but only been to Malaga and Barcelona for long weekends on the mainland.
I'm the same with Solar, Battery and EV, they have started doing a scheme called homes as power stations to use batteries to support the Nat Grid sounds pretty good and hopefully it will pay well.

Sounds like a good trip. Luxembourg worth a visit if you have the time.
