    Ben Hughes

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cvgnl34qvm5o Good experience for Ben. If they make Europe competition again perhaps a return to Caernarfon until Xmas would be a good move.

Then again PSG, the cream of a Farmer's league in the view if some, have dispatched the best of the PL.

    Ranting

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cvgnl34qvm5o Reminded me of Williams' rant at pitch side after about 20 minutes in the home game against Portsmouth. We were nil nil at the time and the only team creating chances. For me this was the start of the end. Letting fly in the dressing...

I think senility is more of the issue here...

    Grimes...

I pretty much agree with you, though I obviously rate Grimes' contribution more highly. People understandably identify Grimes with the slow buildup style under Martin and to a lesser extent under Williams. That's partly fair, because a more deliberate style matches Grimes' attributes well, but...

Fair does, I forgot to scroll all the way down to the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. His next full season was with Northampton in 2017/18.

    Grimes...

Interesting that in the 2019/20 (Cooper's first) Grimes won a DM league best 76 tackles and won the most duels. A similar story the previous season under Potter. The drop in tackles in more recent seasons may largely be a result of us having more of the ball.

    Grimes...

From 5 years ago, mainly under Potter. Shame that under Martin and Williams we didn't see more of this version of Grimes. Plenty of tackles from 5 minutes in. His 43 tackles won this season is 84th percentile, so the idea that he doesn't get stuck in doesn't stack up.

In an ideal World I'd have both, not least because they're different players fulfilling different roles. Certainly given a choice between Grimes and Fulton anchoring the midfield in a 4-1-4-1, which we used several times under Sheehan, with O'Brien further forward, I would choose Grimes every...

    Grimes...

Grimes has played one season in League One, with Northampton, in 2017/18. Similarly O'Brien has played a solitary season at the same level, in 2018/19 with Bradford, when he managed a career high 4 goals. The reality is there is very little to choose between the two in terms of goals...

Indeed I do. Stats are just a form of information, and I like my opinions to be informed ones.

    Play-offs

He's only recently turned 23, young for a centre back. His contract is up in the summer. Wycombe are expecting 400k minimum compensation, but given most of his academy days were with Bristol City, that may be optimistic.

I agree with the broad thrust of your argument. The manager's perspective also plays a big part, so that even if you have a good combination (say Franco and Grimes) they still need to be instructed in a way that makes good use of their strengths. Williams had a weird mishmash if slow tempo build...

You're probably right, but LoB might accept a pay cut in return for a 3 year contract. But we need to get this sorted early and move on if there's no movement.

I aspire to strike a balance between subjectivity and objective facts. I may not get the balance right but the data often has an interesting story to tell. It's easy to be focused too much on one aspect of a player's performance and ignore the underlying data. Take Tymon as an example. His...

    Grimes...

Since the 2018/19 season LoB has 16 Grimes has 17, pretty much identical. The most LoB has had in a season is 3, Grimes has 5 twice. Neither prolific, but that's to be expected for Grimes as a DM. LoB is an 8 so you'd expect more. But his strongest asset is his defensive work. He had a stellar...

    O’Brien

LoB has a strong negotiating hand. If he says he only wants to go to Swansea, then Forest have the choice of acceding to his wishes or having him in the bench, if that. We would still have to fork out a lot of money, which probably will scupper things. We need to get clarity on this early on in...

Ok, I misunderstood what you meant by former manager.

Numbers (i.e. facts) can challenge false preconceptions. If you have an open mind they can be invigorating.

    Grimes...

It's debatable that Grimes was an 8, certainly not under Williams, where he was clearly a 6. I agree that LoB was a better fit for Sheehan's game plan that revolved around winning the territorial battle rather than a possession one.
