To show balance, I'll reiterate that J_B said 'pure' water. Which is as close to tasteless as possible. It's also something that 99% of people will never taste.

Unless you're boiling and condensing every glass of water you drink, or getting it from some fancy lab, you'll never have 'pure' water.

Anyway, to weigh in on this watery debate in a Live Aid thread, I'll brush off my utterly boring statistics degree and get out my good ole bell curve. Does the majority of water taste the same in the UK/World? Yes. Are there outliers, at either end, that vary in minerals, filtration and so on...

Is water wet or is it an effect of being covered in liquid?

Wow, I was unaware of that. I fail to see how that can happen accidentally (especially on BOTH cutoffs), but I’m not a 787 pilot.

To me (and this is just me speculating), it looks like pilot flying (first officer) takes off as normal, pilot not flying (captain) reaches back to cutoff the engines out of sight of the first officer…and the captain doesn’t alert to any visual EICAS warnings. When the alarms start to go off...

I don’t believe there is when one cutoff is selected. Just a visual warning that N1 is low on the EICAS (which pilot monitoring should be scanning). There is an audible warning when both are cutoff, as obviously you’re losing other reliant systems then.

When it first happened we were speculating that it looked like a double engine failure, it’s just such a rare thing that you can almost discount it (without bird activity in the area). This does indeed seem to be that, albeit an intentional ‘failure’.

Indeed Coops, sadly. I can’t come to any other conclusion yet, from my armchair. Also going back to the ‘loud noise’ that the surviving passenger heard, that was likely the RAT being deployed automatically.

They aren’t guarded, but you do need to pull them before switching them (i.e. you can’t just knock them into cutoff). They are well out of the way of a pilot flying’s view/attention, so it’s possible pilot not flying could do it without the other noticing (PNF being the captain in this case)...
