Ivor Allchurch is arguably the greatest footballer in the history of Swansea City Football Club and one of the very best to have played for Wales.
‘Ivor Allchurch – Golden Days’ the recent documentary commissioned by the Swans Trust that tells Ivor’s story from the perspective of his family was shown at a packed Swansea Jack last night, at a free event open to all Swans fans.
This was the last of several public showings of the film, in the presence of the Allchurch family and kindly hosted by Mal Pope who ended the evening by hosting a very popular Q&A.
The documentary featured in depth interviews with Ivor’s wife, Esme, and sons, John and David where the film gives – for the first time – the human story of the humble man behind the legend from those who knew him best.
The film was commissioned by the Swansea City Supporters’ Trust and was made by David Brayley and Max Webborn, two of the three filmmakers behind the critically acclaimed football film, ‘Wonderland – The Alice Street Story’ (2023).
Since the first public screening of the film at the Taliesin Theatre last year, the feedback for the film has been outstanding and this was echoed again by the people in attendance last night.
What was particularly pleasing was to have the support in the room not just of the Allchurch family but of so many former players such as Alan Curtis MBE, Nigel Stevenson, Anthony James, Nigel Dalling, Tony Cottey, Martyn James along with Swans legend Terry Medwin’s wife, Joyce.
All were extremely complimentary of not just the film, but also the work that the Trust have put in over the past two years in relation to highlighting and promoting the Heritage and History of the Swans more of which can be read HERE
It was so pleasing to hear similar comments from David Allchurch at the end of the Q&A who publicly thanked the filmmakers, David and Max, and also the Trust for helping tell his father’s story and for promoting the club’s heritage.
Filmmaker and Ambassador of the Swans Trust, David Brayley, said, ‘Thanks to all at The Swansea Jack for providing such a wonderful event to showcase our film. I know Max and myself were hugely impressed by the environment created within the venue in relation to the display of the film on every screen in the room. To see people sitting in the Ivor Allchurch booth, watching a film about the great man himself was fantastic. It was the perfect setting to tell Ivor’s story and promote the heritage of our football club. We are so grateful that so many turned out on what was an awful night in terms of the weather and to Mal Pope for expertly hosting the Q&A. It was great to hear so many people commenting afterwards on how much they enjoyed the film and how emotional the whole evening was. Thanks to the Trust for arranging such a wonderful evening.’
Trust Chair Dave Dalton added ‘What a wonderful evening and every time I watch this amazing story is just an absolute joy and privilege. Once again everyone was absolutely transfixed to the screens and this project has been an amazing piece of work that David and Max have absolutely nailed. Seeing how positively everyone has been not just on this film but on the wide variety of other Heritage projects we’ve been delivering over the past few years gives us the encouragement we need to do more and I’m excited as to what we decide to do next’
The Trust also took the opportunity at both the Taliesin Theatre and Swansea Jack screenings to help raise awareness of the work of the Swansea City Former Players’ Association (FPA) and thanks to the generosity of those who attended the screenings we were able to raise £600 which will go towards their work of supporting former Swans players. This will be presented to the FPA next month.
It was a great night of nostalgia and emotion for all in attendance and the Trust would like to place on record it’s grateful thanks to everyone at the Swansea Jack for hosting the evening and to the FPA committee and members for supporting our work. It was also announced last night that we’ll soon be able to release the film on YouTube for anyone who has yet to see it.
We’ll update all our members and supporters as soon as this happens. In the meantime, if anyone would like to learn more or get involved with any of our Heritage projects just get in touch with us info@swanstrust.co.uk
