Felt sorry for Hagler that night.

"Boo, Boom" was a clever, classy southpaw who won literally every major title available to him in a distinguished 10 year career that saw him rise to a pinnacle that few fighters have managed since, as an Undisputed World Champion!!!

He had 3 World Title fights in just 6 months in 1980, and when he won that split decision against Vito Antuofermo in March 1980 he became the first British fighter to go to the States and win a World Title since Ted Kid Lewis in 1917.

Minter later admitted he fought the wrong fight against Hagler. He was going to bide his time and stretch the fight out - 15 rounds in 1980 - but that went tits up when he got cut in the first minute, and when round 2 started he decided to abandon all his planning and go toe to toe with Hagler. In just over 7 minutes his face was a bloody mess and his titles were gone.

That night we saw the start of Marvelous Marvin Hagler's brilliant World Title career. He was denied being crowned World Champion by the riot that followed that stoppage at Wembley, and vowed never to fight in England again.

Vito Antuofermo who had lost his titles to Minter was ringside that night, and one of the drunken mob decided to throw a punch at him, and ended up unconscious on the floor from one punch from the former World Champion. 😂😂

I was lucky enough to meet Alan in The Townsman in Swansea and he was a real character. He seemed a little gruff and abrasive, but was very funny, with a dry sense of humour.

RIP Champ. 👊👊

Ive also met him in Swansea at the boxing in the Top Rank, also sitting on the table that night was the Swansea City manager John Bond.

Excellent boxer troubled by weak skin throughout his career which accounted for nearly all his losses. Olympic medallist and won an undisputed world title on American soil. Three great fights with Kevin Finnegan for the British title and you couldn't put a fag paper between them in all three but Minter got the nod each time. The Hagler fight was a stain on his career and British sport but I loved watching his fights and he always gave value.
