Swans midfielder Joe Allen may have to wait to make his much anticipated second debut for the club as he not fit enough to start at Rotherham on Saturday. The Welshman has played no part in the pre season fixtures and has been working on his fitness after picking up an injury on international duty....

Its a long season and he isn't 100% ready, no surprise that we have ruled him out when there are 46+ matches to go.

I see the negative shit about Joe's fitness and injuries has started 🙄

Surely a bit concerned FB? I’d honestly be surprised to see any of the older welsh internationals playing much until after the World Cup.

He played 44 games for Stoke last season, everyone on here and at the club knew he was recovering from the injury he picked up for Wales when he signed.

No not at all risc, as has been stated he is still recovering from an injury and they don't want to risk him and as md has stated, he played 44 games for Stoke last season.

Trust me, he won't let us down.

Genuine question cos I'm no medic or sportsman, but why does it take so long to get over a football injury given the underlying fitness of the injured player and the quality of the medical/physio/fitness staff at football clubs? I get it for serious stuff like breaks.

The club is in his blood. The person who will be disappointed the most about not making it for Saturday will be Joe himself.

The fact he didn’t feature in the Plymouth or Charlton games showed he wasn’t going to be fit for the start of the season.

The average Joe (no pun intended here with Allen) will get over a sprain or a dead leg in a few days to a week and won't really notice anything more with it because they are extremely unlikely to be doing anything that would seriously exert their body to anything close to resembling its limits and therefore won't aggravate the underlying cause of the injury.

With sportsmen its different, even when you are not playing a match you are training most days of the week and most serious sportsmen will be trying to push themselves all the time to get better. If you have an underlying issue that caused said sprain then if you blindly just keep training you will only cause recurrences of the injury and at worst it could even become chronic (Jefferson Montero's hamstrings are a prime example here).

Its why physios are paid so much at a first rate club to help identify and consistently monitor the player's fitness levels and extents of any injuries that may require rest and recuperation.
