Assisted Dying

This hasn't been rushed and we're still in the middle of deciding about it. It now goes to the House of Lords and then almost certainly comes back to the House of Commons, so expect at least another couple of years before a decision is reached.

I watched a bit of the debate on TV and thought it was Parliament at its best. MPs from all sides were actually talking and listening to each other. They talked about their own personal experiences and that of their constituents, and some of them changed their minds based on what they had heard. And that happened both ways. There wasn't any pantomime shouting and jeering and it was a serious debate by grown-up people.

I am in favour of introducing assisted dying, as long as there are robust safeguards in place which is something we can legislate for. Other countries, including Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Austria, Canada, and New Zealand have all introduced it. Additionally, assisted dying is legal in parts of the United States and all states in Australia. Colombia, Ecuador, and Italy have also had assisted dying legalized by their constitutional courts.

Are we saying we can learn from best and poor practice in those countries? We should be looking to incorporate best practice and eliminating poor practice/mistakes those countries have identified from their reviews etc.

It’s about giving people a choice and enabling those who may need to use the legislation to have the ability to decide for themselves.

This has to be one of the hardest subjects ever to talk about. I watched both my parents pass away, where death was imminent, yet was told it could be a few hours or a few days, God knows what they were experiencing then. I know that’s a different topic to people who are terminally ill, to end their life before being put through pain.

I suppose when you look at it, even if you had an animal, say or dog or cat, where death is imminent it would be put to sleep, yet the death scenario for humans is nothing like that, I won’t go into the details, but it’s not.

You’re right it’s not. Which is why the argument that goes “we euthanise animals to end their suffering but won’t do the same for humans” has always been such an idiotic take on this subject.

Eh? Why would you think that’s an idiotic take. Personally I think it’s a very fair comparison.

Dogs and cats don’t own property, money and have unscrupulous relatives who will be keen to get their hands on it.

Have totally flipped my feelings on this one.

Always against it previously but due to my brother’s current experience I’ve changed my mind completely. He’s been on a driver for 7 days suffering from an aggressive melanoma (diagnosed in Dec ‘24) and has been in pure agony and is unrecognisable. He wants to go and we all hate the fact that he’s going through this. Not to mention the toll on our elderly parents.

Quite right, Major. We are not starting from a blank canvas here and the base legislation of these countries, coupled with a review of how their practices have evolved, should enable a smoother pathway to this becoming lawful.

Best wishes, Biggar.

That’s heartbreaking to read, let alone experience. Love to you and your family ❤️

Awful to read that. Best wishes to you and yours.

Of course but that is an entirely different argument. The cats and dogs argument is valid. I mean when you look at it, what percentage of people are likely to coerce their relative towards an early death just for financial gain, I would hazard a guess under 10%. Yet the rest are suffering simply because of the distrust in humans. It is something that needs to be discussed. I feel awkward as hell even talking about this, but I think when it happens that you may need what they are talking about, then it’s too late.

I agree it needs a debate and I’m not against assisted dying on principle. My point is that it is not simple. We’re mostly agreeing and it’s Saturday night so I’ll leave it there for now. (y)
