& still with wages over 100% of income (& that’s excluding Messi!) so little respite in sight.

To call it obscene would be an understatement. How a football club can have more debt than a small country and still be shamelessly recruiting and offering bumper contracts to keep star players beggars belief.

Currently wages are at 103% of turnover, allegedly the Messi contract would have put them at 120% of turnover, good to see that the La Liga FA are finally showing the balls to stand up to Barca and Real Madrid who have walked over their FA for decades with impunity. Quite right that they refused to ratify the new Messi contract.

The fault lies with the previous president (Bartomeu) who signed players on big wages and even longer contracts, some leaving the club for a lot less than they cost. The new president Laporta was shocked when he saw the results of the latest audit. It was double of what he and the board were expecting left from the reign of Bartomeu, hence why Laporta is on a mission to try and cut costs. All the players including the manager (who along with Pique) was among the first to offer to drastically cut their wages. Messi had already cut his to 50%.

If Barça were Real Madrid, they would quietly and in an unseen manner have their debts miraculously taken care of. It’s happened many times. Los Merengues, the club of government and royal family.

I believe Pique, and others, are deferring wages, not actually taking less than they're contractually owed.
