Unbelievable, but he retired at 27, because he didn't want to be in the limelight anymore!!

RIP "The King"

Heaven will have a cracking team this year - Phil Bennett will only make the bench. 😇

But now the belts are empty
Came a sadness with the dawn
And the body-press is idle
And the valley's blinds are drawn
Disaster struck this morning
When a fitter's mate named Ron
Cracked the mould of solid gold
That once made Barry John

Beautiful ❤️
A proper wordsmith is Mr Boyce 👏

They were both in business together in the 1970's in either a sports shop or menswear.

I used to see Barry John quite often in The George, Walters Road, when he used to cover the All Whites (long before the regions) as a sports reporter.

A lovely guy sitting by the bar, and would sometimes chat, but other times seemed that he wanted to remain anonymous.

You chuck it, I’ll catch it.

RIP Barry. I was “you” minus any actual talent and skill, on Penlan School rugby field in 1972.

Another one of the greats gone

Very sad, he was a mercurial rugby player.

RIP, Barry John.

Been watching Slammed in the Eighties series that been on, been an enjoyable look back in time at Welsh Rugby, but I can see why Barry finished playing at 27 after watching tonight's episode it was mostly about JD tonight and I got to say the way him and his teammates were treated when they came back from NZ by the WRU was disgusting they were amateurs who were playing against a side who were basically professional, the Welsh had to fund that tour themselves and then to come back and be treated like they were a bag of shit was disgraceful, no wonder he went North.
