Best "alternative" songs ever...

Looking at what's been posted so far on this thread, I'm not sure what the definition of 'alternative' is but here's a 2 for 1 song originally by gay icons, Village People, and covered by gay icons, Pet Shop Boys. It has also recently found a revived popularity in the plight of those fleeing from Ukraine.

Saw them live in Cambridge in about 90/91. Such a fun gig. Still have a plectrum from that night somewhere

The Stranglers doing " Walk On By " the Burt Bacaharach / Hal David composition made famous by Dusty Springfield , they take it to a new and very different level .

Thanks for highlighting that , it always fascinated me how , so called punks , at that time could take a classic song and turn it upside down .

To add , always thought The Stranglers were unfairly classed as punk .

I thought they were different and new , unlike my ability to use post YouTube clips .

Dusty Springfield? Not sure about that. The song was written for Dionne Warwick and was a top 10 hit in UK and US in 1964. A lot of people have covered it since with differing degrees of success but I don't think Dusty was one of them. Stranglers version is excellent though.

I lived in and around Guildford during the 70s and the Stranglers, originally called the Guildford Stranglers, were definitely around a good few years before punk. I think I saw them in 74. Even then, a lot of their early songs were lyrically quite 'angry' and I think this is probably what aligned them with punk when it was taking off even though they were seasoned musicians and definitely not from the DIY ethic that was the driving force behind punk.
