Bizarre penalty

Bloody hell, and we think the Championship refs are bad.

I should add, that rule is probably in place to stop a sub or whoever trying to cheat an advantage in a game by keeping the ball in play for his team to pick up. In that instance it wasn't the case and common sense should prevail.

While you could argue for the spirit of the law in this case, the truth of the matter is that while the ball is in play anything that happens in there is sacrosanct. It is also the truth of it that the player touched the ball before it went out, the fault lies with the player in this case and also with the coaching team for allowing their substitutes to be warming up practically on the touch line in the first place.

Bizarre? Yes.
Correct? Yes
Controversial? No

this happened two seasons ago ... i imagine refs have been told in the meantime not to be so dumb again

off to find some ancient footy footage that i can get proper worked up over...

It’s silly. The ball was clearly, for all intents and purposes, out. He shouldn’t have touched it but have word, yellow if you really insist, but penalty? No way. Referees should not in any circumstances be influencing score lines and that is exactly what happened here. If it happened to us I’d expect Mr Cooper to gather the troops and get them down the tunnel quick sharp.

Player off the field touches the ball while he's not involved in the game - obvious foul. Just so happens that it's in the box.

Nailed on penalty.

Doesn't matter if the ball was obviously going out - it wasn't out.

Should they be warming up behind the goal line and so close to the goal in the first place.
Rules are the rules though, so can't really argue.

Do you really think that should be a penalty? Honest answer please.

Yes I do, ball was still in play. Rules are rules, if it had happened outside of the box it would have just been a free kick and a booking. The fact that it happened inside the box doesn't change that, we all hear the saying "if it was outside the box it would have been given", well this time it has.

Doesn’t really matter what I think, does it? Those are the rules.

Of course you’d feel a bit hard done by if you were a fan of the team, but I’d be more pissed off at the daft substitute doing what he did.

I get that he shouldn’t have touched it, or that they shouldn’t be standing there, but if you think that is a penalty you need your head read, rule or no rule. He was simply stopping a ball which was effectively out of play. How someone can claim to enjoy football and at the same time claim that the offence is worthy of a potentially game changing penalty is bizarre. I wouldn’t care if the bloke was red carded or had a talking to but to say it’s a pen is laughable.

The sub did something daft for no reason that would change the game, he wasn’t keeping it in play ffs, he was just stopping it rolling away. The rule and the penalty is stupider than the sub and I find it incredulous that any football fan would expect to see a penalty given for that.

Maybe you need to watch the video again, because the impression that the ref and the commentators give is that the ball has not yet crossed the line...so he has kept it in play. It does look marginal though, but they used VAR to decide it.

I hear you what you’re saying but you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that there was only one place that ball was going. He wasn’t keeping it in, he was just stopping it instinctively to give it back. He wasn’t interfering with play and his actions could have zero impact.

Anyway, we’ll disagree for all eternity on it, you think it should be a pen, I think giving a pen for it is stupid. No point arguing over it.

What’s the alternative? Indirect free kick inside the box?
