Burke Shelley RIP

Hugely influential and unique. Pleased to have seen them live some years back. LAF.

RIP

RIP

Saw them in the Top Rank Swansea around 1976 and Cardiff Castle supporting Queen and Manfred Mann’s Earth band.

Great song titles like Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman, In the grip of a tyrefitter’s hand, You’re the biggest thing since powdered milk and Crash course in brain surgery among others.

Budgie were one of those hard working bands that kept cropping up as support act to a lot of bands I went to see in the early-mid-70s so I probably saw them 3-4 times. Sassafras from Merthyr were another. Both good bands. RIP Burke.

They were one of the headliners at Reading in 1982 mind.

Didn't realise they were still going in '82 but like I said, a very hard working band so not surprised as they were the sort of band who would probably carry on gigging as long as they were physically able. Noticed Randy California also on that bill, I met him when his band, Spirit did a short UK tour in '81 and I was in the support band for the tour. At one gig on that tour in Aylesbury, there was also a young local band on the bill who opened for us, called Marillion. I wonder what happened to them?

I was there for that, wish I'd seen them earlier though, when Tony Bourge was the guitarist.

That’s a pretty cool poster. Reading was pretty much a metal festival back then by the looks of it, only Friday looks mildly diverse. It struck that I know people who have played in at least a couple of those bands, I think, and surprised to see Terraplane was about in ‘82.

Cheers, Darran! :D Something else about that band/tour, the singer in our band was a guy called Richard Macphail who used to manage Genesis and was in school with Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks & Mike Rutherford when the band was formed and they were still best mates and we used to record demos in our guitarist's bedroom and Rich would take a tape with me on keyboards round to Tony Banks' house for him to listen to and comment ffs!! He wrote a book about his experiences which is a very good read if you like the development and machinations of a band from school to USA arena headliners whether you like the band or not - I bought the Kindle edition off Amazon a while back. In his book, he mentions our band which was called MC² at the time we both joined within a few months of each other but had changed its name to Legion by the time we supported Spirit in '81.

That’s fabulous D, I just love these kind of stories. On a side note I think Peter Grant the legendary Led Zeppelin went to thar school too.
