Computer Monitor help please

Can I ask the technically gifted to give me some help, please? I bought a second hand desktop computer and monitor the other day and I'm getting flaring or striping appearing off the right hand side of words and some images on the screen. The seller had it all set up in his house and gave me a demo of the kit before I bought it, and this problem was not apparent. This leads me to think I've screwed up something in setting the kit up here, and my subsequent tinkering.
Any suggestions to remove the problem appreciated, and remember I am to computer technology what Boris Johnson is to truth telling.

Are you using a VGA or DVI cable? It may be worth checking it’s seated correctly. Display port or HDMI might be a better option.

I don't know, but I've just switched the computer back on again after two hours, and the feckin' problem has gone! It's like it's returned to default settings, but I'm sure the problem was there over several sessions of switching on and off over the past two days, so now I'm not sure what's going on. I did make sure the cable securing screws were tight at both monitor and PC end and there was a tiny bit of play, so maybe that was it. Anyway, thanks for help.

If there’s screws in the connector it’s VGA or DVI - always with reseating. If your monitor has a settings button press it, scroll to input and select ‘auto’. Also, give it a good thump.
