What about something as simple as no tackling above waist height? That is what is happening anyway as they get lower and lower down the torso

Scrapping the scrum would also be a great start.

Other than the front row, are there big head impacts in a scrum? I've no idea, never been anywhere near one thank god

If the players win insurance will go through the roof and the next thing you know clubs will be getting the disclaimers written into contracts.

Ok, tackling lower is one thing......BUT I was 6ft3 and a spit under 18stone when I was in my pomp.
I used to tackle people head on standing up.

When I was lighter I went low and felt more trauma to my neck and shoulders.
Side on tackling I was always taught to position my head behind the waist of the attacker, so many get their heads in front of the thighs and get knocked out
The rugby league "double tackle" can cause issues......one should go high, the other low
Look at Lydiate and Elias yesterday for Wales, both went low and one had to leave and be replaced as they both clashed heads.

It is so technical and on the spur of the moment.

Maybe like when catching a kick off, the tackler should shout "MINE!!!!" ????

It's such a dynamic sport as every coach has their thoughts and demands.

One of the big problems with modern rugby is the size of the players, 25 years ago and George North would have been lock or number 8! The collisions are absolutely huge.

This.

I dont watch rugby anymore but my brother does quite a bit. He was up here yesterday and commented that the (previous) rules allowing higher tackles came from the southern hemisphere but at a time that the average player size was smaller. Now we have some brutal collisions due to the kinetic energy of big men running at pace hitting higher up the body.

A very quick google:

How much force does a rugby tackle have?
Main outcome measurements Maximum impact force was measured with a custom built forceplate incorporated into a 45 kg tackle bag. Results The overall average shoulder force was 1660 N. The average impact force for tackling without shoulder pads was 1684 N compared to 1635 N for wearers.

What force does it take to get a concussion?
A head injury expert says that most concussions deliver 95 g's to the human body upon impact. G-force is a unit of force equal to the force exerted by gravity. In addition, the average football player receives 103 g's when hit during a game.

How many G's can a brain take?
Normal humans can withstand no more than 9 g's, and even that for only a few seconds. When undergoing an acceleration of 9 g's, your body feels nine times heavier than usual, blood rushes to the feet, and the heart can't pump hard enough to bring this heavier blood to the brain.11 Aug 2008

Convert gram to newton
169272.89085999917 gram-force
1660.0000000000002 newton

In a nutshell every single tackle generates more than enough g-force to cause a concussion if the tackle execution is even slightly off. Considering the average rugby player will make...

How many tackles should a flanker make?
A rugby flanker will make around 12 to 14 tackles in an average game. This is close to the highest tackle rate in the team. Your shoulders will take a beating, so you need to be tough.

Call it 12 tackles per game over a 40 game season, plus an international calendar plus training almost daily it makes you wonder why this was never seriously looked at earlier...

Here we go.

It was insensitive and badly timed. He knew exactly what he was doing, bloke is a prick.

So so sad. Younger than me.

Difficult to know when the damage was done to Ryan, he retired early as his body was so battered, but you still see people with trauma to the head every game. I guess I would try to get the tackles lower again, also maybe reduce the number to 13, drop the flankers. That way you’d make the game faster, more space, and maybe encourage the players to be smaller and faster. If you increased the points for a try to 6 maybe, encourage a more open game. I’d definitely try to change the working of the scrum, so much time is lost there. More time the ball is in play, more tired people get, smaller and fitter they’d need to be.

Also reduce the number of subs, case in point SA brining on the Bomb Squad,
