• Thank you very much | Diolch yn fawr

All at JackArmy.net would like to thank everyone who has played a part on this site over the past 25 years whether that is through writing, contributing, moderating, posting or just visting and reading.

Without any of you the work that has gone into the site would have been pointless and we will always be proud that we built, generated and managed a community that was such a big part of the Swansea City supporting life for so long.

It has been a pleasure to bring to you the site for so long but the time is now right to turn the lights out for the last time but we do it both with a heavy heart and a sense of pride driven by the so many messages received since we announced the closure.

The site will remain here for a period until we archive and mothball it for the last time later this summer but all aspects are in a read only format.

Thank you though for all the memories

Good afternoon.

Do any of you have any decent recommendations for double glazing firms who don't give it the big sell, ask stupid money then discount hugely saying they're doing me a favour?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond.

Happy to give you my experience, Fathy.

We have recently changed soffits and fascias and I had several quotes via a guy with a van and a ladder, alongside reputable names in the business.

The bigger firms were generally 40% more than the guy with the van. The guy with the van was prepared to cut corners (for example he would do it without scaffolding) which made me a little nervous about quality of work.

We went with Atcost in the end. Regardless of who, everyone made comments about raw material prices and full order books. The salesman applied no pressure, he didn’t need to as a result of his full order books and his pricing generally matched the competition. I’m very pleased with the job that they did.

Thanks for that. Everything is so much more expensive than a few years back. Prices have shot up, wages stay the same.

Was talking to a guy who fitted UPVC windows 2 weeks ago, he reckons you’ll get a much better deal from a local company than the big boys as they’ve smaller overheads. I used a guy called Royston Gooding who’s a small one man band, he was slightly more expensive than a quote from a larger company who were doing to same windows but I know where he lives and his after sales service is good.

Heard a couple of good reports about Atcost, but when my cousin got a price off them they were more expensive that the competitors.

I had a quote a couple of years back. £16K. I fell off my chair and thought the windows have some life in them yet, we'll repaint them. I had another quote before Christmas, £20K. What's worse is when I tried (with both) to negotiate by saying no, they just said fair enough. The latest one said, fair enough we couldn't do it before next September anyway.

So I currently have12 windows 'blown' and am wondering whether to cough up £1500 for the panes or take a full hit on the windows. Getting more quotes atm, but it's all a bit depressing. Especially as will need to do it all again in 20 years....unless I'm dead. Got to look on the bright side.

*both these were local one man bands. I would never have one that outsources their fitting. One was from the Forest too, where they are normally cheaper. A bit 'funny' as well...like Llanelli.
