Just found out a few days ago that a relative of mine passed away after a serious crash at Crosshands last week, the cause was a 90 year old turning the wrong way onto a duel carriageway.

There really should be an age limit for driving licenses and below that regular capability checks above another age limit.

Its not the first time someone who's not capable of driving has caused a death.

These cases are tragic for the people involved. But the fact is that young drivers cause far more accidents and fatalities than older drivers. Mandatory age based retesting is replete with problems and definitely not the panacea it’s often portrayed as.

In this case for example, we don’t know whether the driver’s age was a factor at all. There will be an assumption that it was a factor but that’s all it is. There’ll be an inquest no doubt which will surface this stuff.

Here in Spain, from the age of 70, you have to re-sit the physical and mental suitability test every two years to retain your driving licence. Note: this is not re-sitting your test. It takes place in a doctor's office. I'm in favour of it, despite my first coming up next May!

You’re not 70?
Blimey. 👀

There seems to be a death on our local roads weekly now. I’d imagine there was another one yesterday afternoon with the incident that choked all the roads up around Neath / Swansea.

It’s painfully obvious something needs to happen on this. If someone is not fit to drive at 75/80 after retest and medical they should have keys taken off them.

It makes difficult conversations in families removed from the equation too. I understand the pride and independence but that’s a sideshow when there is a genuine risk.

Throwing out the young person card is stupid. There should be other rules in place there, which there are eg 6 points and retest. They should be tightened on size of engine, amount of people in the car etc but that doesn’t stop the need to make a bold move with old people.
