Age shouldn't come into it, looks like people have had sympathy for him because of his age, it's wrong, just my opinion
The fact it was "only a few days into lockdown" is actually a mitigating factor in all of this. Our understanding of the developing pandemic was a lot less than now. People were stressed.
Remember that this guy's daughter has testified that her dad had basically lost the plot over the previous 12 months.
The Judge seems to agree, though of course he's not an expert like what we are:
"Having heard the evidence of your state of mind in the year leading up to this awful event, and especially in the preceding few days, I am of the view that your mental state was severely affected at the time. That of course is in line with the verdict the jury returned in this case.".
