I've been a fan since 2002. Their back catalogue got me on first listen but all their new stuff since then has taken a few listens to get into. This is no different

The newer, proggy stuff isn't to everyone's taste. Generally I'm into it, but they could probably have trimmed the last album down a bit. Be interesting to see if they could write the same kind of heavier tunes they did in the 80's without it turning into another No Prayer for the Dying.

Otherwise, colour me under-fucking-whelmed 🤨

I thought the production sounded horrible but apparently that's a YouTube issue and it sounds better on Spotify. I don't have Spotify, so 🤷‍♂️

Spotify is brilliant and free if you are happy to put up with ads. Otherwise the subscription is quite reasonable and it means you have access to just about everything ever released. You can make your own playlists and share them with friends. Spotify learns your preferences and offers you daily mixes of stuff you might like. You can download music to your device so you can listen offline. What's not to like?

I am guilty of using streaming services and I say guilty as the streaming companies fleece artists (they pay an average of 0.01p per play) and because users can listen for free, they are less inclined to buy the vinyl, CD or download. In the current climate with bands not having been able to tour for a year the smaller artists have suffered more than ever as the music the only income. Great to see that Bandcamp run a friday where when you buy something 100% goes to the artists and BandCamp take no commission.

I use streaming services to listen in the car but I feel guilty as I have musician friends who are on their arses right now. I buy a lot of music though to try and make up for it.

Strange they didn’t announce this as part of the single release.

Looks like there are some long ones on this

Another double CD for just 10 tracks. I got to give it to them, for better or worse they do their own thing. Some bands have recently harked back to the 80s golden age and I know many people hoped the same for Iron Maiden but it was never realistic

My biggest complaint over the last decade are not the long prog songs but the muddy sounding production and Dickinson sounding increasingly more strained

Brave New World clarity of production and Bruce staying in a comfortable register would be epic but it won't happen. Their producer (Kevin Shirley) is a yes man

Bruce's voice is not what it was, but it was highly unlikely to ever remain that good 40 years and throat cancer onwards. I can forgive that, even if it does make it more noticeable that he can no longer do live over sustained periods what he can in the studio. Can't say I've noticed much wrong with the production standards on the stuff Shirley has done, and he worked on Brave New World too.

In a streaming world I guess the length of an album doesn't much matter any more as you don't need to squash it all on one disc, so in that regard they're setting the trend a bit.

I think this Japanese theme has been knocking about for a while. This was the FC Christmas Card back in 2014;

It led to speculation that the 2015 album (which became The Book of Souls) would have a samurai / Japanese connection given the figures on the roof. That never happened though and people have wondered what the relevance was of the samurai characters... I guess this explains it and for whatever reason the song is only now getting on an album

82 minutes runtime with the last 3 tracks being Harris epics clocking in at 10.20, 12.39 and 11.19 respectively 🥵

I remember when albums were about 45 mins max.

Like the new song though. It’s a grower.

This will be longer than the first two Maiden albums combined

I love the new Blaze album but at 42 minutes it feels as though it's over just as it's kicking into gear

I didn't like this song when I first heard it but it's a grower. The production is shit though. Guitars are weak and Nicko sounds like he's playing cardboard boxes, Steve Harris bass sounds as busy and squidgy as ever. It's as if they were never in the room at the same time ..........

Adrian Smith has an album out with Richie Kotzen, it worth a spin, sounds decent.

This is what it would sound like with a prime Bruce Dickinson. Immeasurably more enjoyable IMO, particularly when you consider this was recorded in some guys living room and not in his native language either. You can't ignore the cancer battle and you definitely can't beat the aging process, but I'm sure more can be done in the studio to help him out, even if it's tweaking writing styles to accommodate him. I find his strained vocals painful to listen to these days and that sucks because the music is still great
