We all have off days where we probably look a bit frustrated at work, what he’s proved time and time again is that he will turn up and give it a go no matter how badly he is treated.Looked a bit pissed off yesterday... warming up most of the game not engaging with Cullis and the others.
I was surprised he wasn't involved yesterday.
The biggest problems that Fulton has had for the past four years is that before that he was a presentable if unspectacular box to box midfielder. He was combative and could occasionally show some pretty outrageous bits of skill and quick intricate passing, then Martin and Williams happened and all of that was coached out of him by managers who were slaves to possession, the Process and outlandish tactics that may as well have been back to front French scribbled onto the back of a cereal packet. At the club for eleven years. Nearly 300 games played in either the Premier League or the Championship. Sixteen goals. Been a regular first team choice for almost every manager he's had. A go to guy for Sheehan now he's no longer shackled to Grimes. Still only 31.
Will never fathom the contempt that some people have for Fulton.
Not to sound like another suck up poster on this forum but, damn that is spot on. Honest, we all have opinions but cannot argue this post and Fulton past and present status. For me, he has had his time, he used to pull out the odd nice pass or shot, but now for last few seasons it's been back pass and foul. It's time to move on. He has 1 year left on his contract. Time to sell. The biggest problems that Fulton has had for the past four years is that before that he was a presentable if unspectacular box to box midfielder. The problem facing him is that it is extremely difficult at his age to now reinvent himself into something needed by the side, Franco assuming he stays this summer will without a doubt be one of the first names on the teamsheet as would O'Brien (or whoever is signed as his replacement in the heart of midfield) with either Eom , Cooper or Widell playing in the hole as an attacking midfielder.
During those four years under Martin and Williams he often looked lost, was always playing the safe pass backwards (even right back into the press that we just beat) and would often go many minutes at a time without a touch of the ball which for a midfielder in a possession focused side is outright bizarre if not unforgiveable.
Can he reinvent himself to serve a role in the side?
Honestly I don't know, but that is the challenge he faces right now, in his current state he is not and should not be in the first choice XI and instead is more of a squad player.
Can't you see the difference in the performance of the team when Fulton comes on to replace Allen? The midfield loses it's energy and drive and becomes pedestrian and less creative. Fulton offers absolutely nothing, and if we are looking to progress as a club he needs to be got rid of.At the club for eleven years. That's the main takeaway from this. If we are looking to progress.... I have little doubt based on recent club activity that we are really looking to push on big time and with intention. I have 0 issue with experience within the team and Naughton and Allen brought that. We don't know what goes on behind the scenes and it might be the case Fulton sees his contract out as he brings experience behind the scenes. But he has to bring more than that. Allen did, Naughton did. Fulton brings nothing to the team. We literally get worse when he plays. Yes he had a good match the other week. But 1 match in a few years is not what we need. I would be happy with a clear out. Cullen, Fulton, Cooper to some extent. Can't you see the difference in the performance of the team when Fulton comes on to replace Allen? Unless someone comes in to buy him its unlikely we will pay him off. That's the main takeaway from this. If we are looking to progress.... I agree with other points. But for me Fulton replacement and now with Allen gone is vitally important if we want to control games. Franco is not the finished product and other than under 21 we don't have an influx of midfielders. Widdell will be an interesting one. But we defo need to add more in midfield.Fulton's not the best, but not the worst. The mind boggles if people look at our squad for next season at the current time and think replacing him is a priority:
- We need a backup GK unless Sheehan is happy for the Fish to take that role.
- We need 2 starting quality CB's to play alongside and backup Cabango (1 if Darling stays).
- We need cover at FB with Naughton gone.
- We need at least 1, possibly 2 CM's with Allen retired and O'Brien likely gone.
- We need to decide if any 2 of Cullen, Vip, Yates and Kuka are good enough to be our options up-front and if not, have a lot of work to do finding someone to bring in and finding buyers for some of the 4 already in the team.
Adding another hole in the squad at CM in the light of all that seems crazy to me.
