Yesterday’s defeat at Blackpool was just another one of those games where we came up against a team who was happy to see us retain as much possession seemingly as we wanted but with them knowing that there was very little in our armory to harm them. At the end of the game we had […]

He quite often uses the term that they have good training sessions and are learning all the time. He also says there is still a lot of work to do. Surely after 35 games those comments are contradictory.

I actually like the Process - when it works! Away at WBA the other night, against a team low on confidence and who felt they had to attack us at every opportunity, being the home side and a 'big' club, it worked in spades.

The trouble is, the team is not adapting to circumstances. Yesterday, Blackpool scored a very early goal thanks to poor defending, then they were content to watch us play the ball around in front of them for 85 minutes and try to catch us on the break. Go ahead, they said, you can have all the possession you want, but we'll defend like crazy in our own box and you won't get a sniff.

We persisted in trying to walk the ball into the net, and we never really got further than the edge of their area, apart from the close range Christie header. We were overloaded with attacking players, but we never gave them a chance. I thought our most dangerous moment came in the first half when Smith put a wicked in-swinging cross in with his right foot, which flashed across the face of the goal and caused panic in their defence. Did we do it again? No. Why not? We should have been peppering their box with crosses, and the chances were that sooner or later the ball would fall to Piroe or Obefemi. But no, let's keeping playing ten yard passes in areas that don't hurt the opposition. Somebody has GOT to sit Martin down and explain to him that the object is to score more goals than the team you are playing, and that sometimes you've got to take a chance, you've got to get the ball into their box at all costs.

If the players are being judged by their completed passes stats why would anyone risk a defence splitting pass which might or might not come off when you can turn around, pass it backwards to a teammate and preserve your 100% pass rate?

If you don’t occasionally buy a ticket you’ll never win the raffle.

How about the novel idea of getting to the byline and crossing the ball flat behind the defence instead of fart arsing around on the edge of the box.

Or leathering the ball towards that net thing.

If it goes in the net it’s not a completed pass and the opposition get possession from the restart. Very bad in RM’s book.
