It brought back memories of the leatherings I got from my mam and dad, I know they weren't anywhere near as bad as Ian and especially his mother but they were bad enough.

It was how it was then, parents chastised their children by corporal punishment, it was passed down as it was thought it was the only way and some took it too far.
 
He had a shitty upbringing until Sid Pigden got hold of him.

Same here, had wonderful parents and lost them far too soon.
 
I had a miserable childhood.

I now realise I didn't. I had lovely parents, but I'm a stupid prick.
