Jamal Lowe

I saw a post not a million miles from here about Jamal Lowe and how despite his fine season so far, no PL club would be interested in him, partly because he's 27 this year. One response mentioned he'd only spent a small part of his career as a professional. I started thinking about comparisons and found a good one.

A striker whose first season as a pro after non-league success was in the Championship, where he scored 5 in 29. Lowe had 2 and a half seasons with Portsmouth in League One/Two, but scored 6 in 48 in his first Championship season last year.

That striker then scored 16 in 41 and helped his team win promotion to the PL the next season. Lowe has 9 in 27 so far and I wouldn't bet against him scoring another 7 before the end of the season.

That season happened to be his age 27 season. Lowe turns 27 after the season ends, so pretty close.

That striker has done pretty well since, so claims Lowe will attract no attention from PL sides (especially as he's not an out-and-out striker and brings plenty of other things to the table) seem premature.

It's not a difficult question, but who is the comparison I'm using?

Yep. If Lowe get's anywhere near Vardy's success, we'll be very happy. It's obviously unlikely, but not as impossible as some want to suggest.

Didn't Ian Wright also have humble, and later beginnings? I am chuffed and amazed no-one had the good sense to make an approach for Lowe.

With zero inside knowledge of the inner workings of the club, it's fascinating to look at our transfer business over the past 2 windows.

Lowe, Smith and Bennett (possibly also Manning) seem to me to be Andy Scott driven signings. Acquiring players for less than they are worth and reaping the rewards. Lowe fits his profile of best player in a poor team.

While Guehi, Gibbs-White, Whittaker, Woodman and Latibeaudiere seem to be Cooper signings, either players he directly managed for England or had knowledge of as they were in the other youth groups at the same time.

Be interesting to see what happens with our two new MLS signings. Did Scott focus on MLS at the request of the club perhaps?

I was talking to my son about this and the MLS thing. It's always just been easy to go and recruit from Europe, with Brexit it's not the case anymore. I can see more clubs of our size looking to America for some bargains.

I'm more and more convinced as time goes by that Guehi is going to make it at the top level. Regular starter for Chelsea or another top club and plenty of England caps to go with it.

I'd love us to be able to sign him, but I think we'll look back in years to come and take a great deal of pride in how he got his start here.

Listening to Cooper today he seems to know (or care) very little about Arriola. I may be reading too much into it but I wouldn’t be surprised if this one has been foisted upon him.
