It was a bit of a damp squib. Almost like Jed Mercurio had totally run out of ideas, but thought to himself, "feck! I've got to write SOME sort of ending. Who's still alive? I know, I'll blame it all on Buckells, and make that new female commander smirk a bit, so people will think she's corrupt too. I might even get a seventh series out of it......."

Ok, having watched every one, but not got particularly engrossed in it other than series 2 and Series 3, and pretty tuned out after series 5 and most of this one, this was my view.

For my money, Mercurio realised he'd f***ed it up with all the H shit, and that's what led to people expecting Ernst Stavro Blofeld with Davros Dalek stroking his pussy at the end. They said often enough that the idea of 'H' was a mistake in the clunky dialogue. That storyline should have ended with series 3, when the programme totally lost the plot with the 'urgent exit required' gunplay shit.

What was left was true to life. A Chief Constable that had covered up a shooting of the wrong suspect and the killing of a black man in jail and then lied his way to the top. A ring of police involved in child sex abuse with MPs and the likes of Savile, and a crime gang that bribed/placed some police to help them out and turn a blind eye, like Buckles, Cottan, Hargreaves, Biggeloe, the prison guards, and various others, and ultimately Gates, Denton, Davidson etc.

Loads of plot holes of course, in the name of drama, but the broad closing premise is DePfeffel Johnson's Britain (or Trump's America) where an incompetent and a liar fails upwards and corruption is rife while careerists like Carmichael allow it all to happen chasing their own promotion. I actually thought the closing stuff from Owen Teale was a straight lift of a Johnson speech. Many out to feather their own nest in every circumstance and some more shameless and ruthless then others in how they do it.

The BBC will be drooling for another series, hence the door needing to be left open, but lets hope not. All that's left is Ted coming back and/or Carmichael joining forces, and the CC being brought down. Really, who cares?

Maybe you're right. Bit of a damp squib though. I guess that what the last few years has shown us with Bojo and co. is that failing upwards is a realistic prospect. It just doesn't make sense as there was no 'H' and no real fourth man and no OCG, just a bumbling idiot running loads of separate enterprises, organising armed mobs and special forces type extractions, and dropping of burner phones in an un-coordinated manner to all and sundry. I'm not buying it. It was a weak conclusion to an otherwise excellent series.
