Honestly Prof, taking into account its the middle of the afternoon, it's an eye opener, different world doesn't even come close

Cold weather vehicle testing inside the Arctic Circle - a one reindeer town and miles from any decent civilisation, no bars or shops, dark all day, basic accommodation, and no internet (in those days). Avoid Jakkvik.

As you may know I live in the NW -a town called Neston on the southern part of Wirral (the bit in Cheshire).
We have driven through there about 100 times in the last 18 years visiting family in South Wales. If you go through in the morning it looks a nice small town. In the afternoon it's like the living dead. My wife picked up on it first.

I went there in the early 90's, was working on a job close by and was staying over. We couldn't find anything open, no pubs, no chip shop, no Chinese, nothing. Thought it was a really odd place.

Blanding in Utah. Small city handily placed for National monuments in the area.

Two restaurants both of which close at 8pm and don’t serve alcohol and a subway which never seems to be open.

Massive drug issue in "Llandod".

The most boring place I've endured is Pembroke Dock.

That's weird, I was going to say the same place and then read your post. Stopped there on way to Moab after Monument Valley. There was just a bowling alley which was in a shop, it was a dry town at the time. Went in but decided not to stay. Drove back a few miles to get fuel in the dark and this car "followed us". Pulled in at fuel station but nobody got out of it. Went in to pay for fuel and there were guns and knives for sale if I remember right, it was like being in a Spielberg film. Got back to our hotel and put a chair up against our door. Glad to get out of there next morning.
