After spending the last 36 hours sporting a non-Covid cold with runny nose, chesty cough and sore throat, and generally feeling like shite, I went to get some medicines from Tesco...Beecham etc....

I have been advised in the past that consuming some Manuka honey really helps a sore throat...Has anyone here invested the big bucks compared to normal honey, and more importantly does it work?

One word very expensive, I bought two jars a while back, I used it to butter wholemeal bread to feed to my fish  :D

Wife used most of one jar, its got its own unique taste which I wasn't fussed on myself.

That's more than one word.

I believe that most if not all honey, contains antiseptic properties. Ditch packet shite, go natural.🙂👍

Natural honey local to where you live is the answer, a Doctor told me that years ago, it can help Hayfever as well obtaining that honey is a challenge though. :(

Have you tried Gower or Gorseinon farm shop.🤔

A lot of research on honey has been done in Cardiff (mainly Cardiff Met) on bacterial infections and in wound healing. So there are three levels

1. The high sugar content inhibits bacteria (it restricts something called water availability ) and is the basis of jam and preserves. The high sugar is also demulcent and soothes the throat
2. All honeys are more effective that sugar alone-they all contain various antimicrobial compounds like peroxides
3. Manuka is very effective as it has higher levels of chemicals like terpenes which are both antimicrobial and help control inflammation.

I did a little work on it about 24 years ago.
