Such a waste of the last years of his playing career

No doubt very good for his bank balance though but in years to come I wonder if he will wish he had played more

I think the bank balance is more important to some players.

And what's wrong with that? Nothing at all. Most of us have families to support and if he could do that better as an unused sub then that's a reasonable thing to do. My own memories of his time with us are all positive.

I would agree with that totally had he been - for arguments sake - a Championship player or below earning say £5k per week and being offered £40k per week to sit on the bench. That becomes a no brainer.

But he was a first choice Premier League player earning well into the 7 figure annual sums, had he chosen to play football instead of watching it I don't think his family would have been on the breadline.

All that achieves then is that the argument of a "short career" comes into it but for most people in the country if you work for 45 years say - work out your total lifetime earnings over that time and if it comes to more than £1.5m then the short career possibly has some validation.

When you are a PL player playing regularly on a PL wage then any move to sit on the bench is just for additional greed.

Comparing this to say you or I switching jobs for maybe £10k a year more (I wish!) is not a fair comparison unless of course your new employer is going to tell you that they don't want you to do any actual work just be ready for work should the person you are covering for stop doing it for whatever reason 😏🤣
