Thousands upon thousands of horses wouldn't have a life without racing. Tens of thousands are employed through it, millions gets put into the economy cos of it. Yes horses will die, but out of approx 100,000 horses that take part in uk racing every year less than 50 will die. I've owned a racehorse and the care and life they are given is incredible. So before anyone says its cruel...think on.

It's cruel.

Doesn't matter if they live in a five star horse hotel. Bred for the enjoyment of humans.

So are pigs/sheep and cows.

Yeah but my bacon doesn't have to run around the supermarket for a couple of years, before slipping in the tins aisle, breaking itself in half, then having to wait for the vet to come and put him out of his pain

One of the horses unseated its rider yesterday and still merrily ran the course jumping the fences. He seemed up for it regardless of the lack of a human.

Maybe. Or they may enjoy it. We’ll never know really unless horses develop the power of speech. :D

Either redesign the jumps or time to pull the plug, basically cruelty for the sake of it.

Thousands upon thousands of horses wouldn't have a life without racing. Tens of thousands are employed through it, millions gets put into the economy cos of it. Yes horses will die, but out of approx 250,000 horses that take part in uk racing every year less than 150 will die. I've owned a racehorse and the care and life they are given is incredible. So before anyone says its cruel...think on.

Why wouldn't they have a life? Is there a limit to how many horses can be alive at one time? Your assertion that they are bred to solely serve the racing industry is horrifying.

The economy defense is another fallacy, you can't excuse animal cruelty because it makes money or employs people.

In addition, 'it's ok because not every one of them dies', or 'its ok because they get treated well' are equally paper thin defences

The Grand National race is a barbaric display of cruelty, there is no action before the act that can make it acceptable.

We'll have agree to disagree my friend....strongly.
To make the assertions you do is astounding, are you gonna fight the corner next of millions of battery hens ? I've been close up to the industry and let me tell you, these horses are cared for and treated better than any animals. What's next? You gonna ban greyhound racing? Cos way more of them go lame/pass away due to racing. You need a stable tour and talk to those who know the sport before making judgement from a distance away.

Nobody is saying that these magnificent beasts aren't cared for and loved.
I'm not a fan of horse racing but understand many thousands are, it brings in jobs and income that is vital to the economy, but let's make this particularly course a little more "horse friendly".
I'm not talking about a Gymkhana, but reducing the hight of certain fences and doing away with hidden traps like water jumps...

You still don't understand the point, if you take care of a horse for 500 days and abuse it for 1, that abuse doesn't qualify as acceptable.

I don't need to go to a stable to pass judgment that horses toppling over in front of one another and dying of 'traumatic brain injuries' is barbaric.

The Paul Nolan-trained Discorama was pulled up by jockey Bryan Cooper and later put down having sustained a pelvic injury.

But that is racing and you have to accept those things

“It is just devastating for the owners and the yard, and it is just one of those awful things, but it is part of racing and that is what it is.

How are they abused?? They are herd animals and bred to run n jump.
Next time you tuck into yer Sunday lunch, think about how porky and daisy were mistreated for years before having their throat cut/bullet in the head before you tuck in. And they were bred for your enjoyment and certainly not meant to live as long as possible and treated well along the way.
Feel you may have contradicted yourself buddy.

My Sunday lunch hasn't contained 'porky' or 'daisy' for many years so I'm free of any contradictions that you impose on me.
