NFL Thread

It's interesting. Nationally I think he's getting slated, I know I saw a clip of Stephen A Smith knocking him. But locally, all the beat writers etc and fans, are all heralding him as the next best thing. I think he showed the passion they want to see. Patricia was a know it all that failed but wouldn't accept his failure.

Mike SIngletary - number 3 on my list of favourite NFL press conference quotes behind Dennis Mora and Dennis Greene!!

Cannot play with him, cannot win with him cannot coach with him

CSF, looks like I was wrong on Stafford not attracting much attention!

Seems like the Panthers offered their first rounder (8th overall pick) and more, but the Rams beat them out, amongst others. Strange deal though and I have no idea who will be the 'winner' of the two teams.

For Detroit, you move on a player who clearly wanted out and he's 33 in a week. In return you got two first round picks (but crucially not a first round pick this year, which may make it harder to move up for a QB in the draft if that's the plan) and a third rounder, but you also got Jared Goff. A QB who many believe was made to look good by McVay and even then every other throw was seemingly a bad one. Even worse, you're handcuffed to him because of his giant contract. On the other hand, those picks could be gold dust for a rebuilding team with a new HC and GM.

The Rams lose draft picks, but then they haven't had a first rounder since 2016 and they still keep winning. They also admit that moving up for Goff was a mistake and handing him a huge contract was another mistake. They're in win now mode. I'm not happy that the Niners will now have another very good QB in the division, but I kind of admire the Rams decision to swing for the fences with this move.

Interesting times ahead in Detroit for sure.

I will admit to being surprised on sunday morning when I found out! I don't know a great deal about Goff, but he has got to a superbowl. And two probowls.

I've listened to half a podcast and they were way up on the trade, thought the Lions had got a cralong deal. Other places have said that the rams have done well also but are a bit more in a win now position.

Apparently the Goff contract is ok going into 2022, but not now. So I dont think they will flip him to anyone else. We are not going to the playoffs anytime soon so I think the two firsts and probably the best of the pick of the current Nfl qbs that we could have picked from is a good get.

Our new GM was part of the the team that drafted Goff so clearly likes him.
We shall see.

I started watching in the days of Nicky Horne and Miles Aitken on CH4. They did what I thought was a good job of explaining the rules to what would've been largely a novice audience. I wonder if nowadays as the audience has matured that there's less time spent towards introducing the game to newbies.

I was going to write how I became a fan of the Raiders but I could sense people getting ready with their "cool story, bro" replies, so I won't.

I ended up living quite close to their home ground when they played in Oakland. It was a rough neighbourhood so I shouldn't have been surprised but the crowd trouble (at least where I was sitting) was just OTT. It was an experience, but I much prefer watching it on tv.

I’m a Raiders fan too. They at least managed to keep my interest until about week 13 this season - an improvement on recent years. That’s the downside with American Football, with no relegation if your team has a bad start to the season there’s really nothing to maintain your interest beyond half way through the season.

Out of interest, where do you stand on Derek Carr? He’s been slaughtered on social media this season which seems harsh to me. If the defence is shipping an average of around 30 points a game it seems daft to blame the QB for your deficiencies.

You're not wrong. At a certain point in a losing season, it becomes so much about draft position (especially in a year when there's a Peyton Manning or Trevor Lawrence available) that wins are treated with disappointment because you're picking later in the draft! The draft and salary cap do so much to level the playing field though, so it's definitely worth it.

Not a Raiders fan, but I'd say Carr is probably around the level of a Rivers or Cousins. A good quarterback, potentially a great one in the right system and surrounded with talent, but not a player who can raise a mediocre team to a higher level. It's a pretty high bar to reach though, so he's definitely good enough to continue as a Raiders starter. I'd definitely swap him for Garoppolo right now.

I thought Gruden bringing in Mariota this season to push him was an odd move. It's good to have a quality backup of course, but Carr is pretty much an Ironman, only missing a couple of games his whole career. The $17.6m over two years being spent on Mariota could have improved the team around Carr instead.

I think Gruden and Mayock have to take a lot of the blame for this season. It's too early to judge a draft, but it's not looking good right now. Two first round picks, 3 in the 3rd round and 2 in the 4th round. That's a lot of high picks for very little production so far. Ruggs always seemed like a strange pick at 12 with every other WR still on the board. Seeing how good the likes of CeeDee Lamb, Jerry Jeudy, Justin Jefferson and Brandon Aiyuk played have made that pick look even worse.

Great to see Nelson Agholor do so well though, always had a soft spot for him.

Yeah, I’ve always thought the draft system was something football could learn from (accepting it’ll never happen though), but it does seem open to abuse. When we beat the 0-10ish Jets a month or two ago I was convinced they threw it to maintain their #1 draft spot (not that a high draft pick has helped them much in recent years!).

Definitely a lot of blame to be placed at Gruden and Mayock’s doors. I’d hoped that with McKenzie gone the bizarre draft picks would end but it hasn’t been the case. As crazy as it seemed at the time, you could see some logic in trading Mack and Cooper for 1st round picks a few years ago but those picks were completely wasted, with the exception of Jacobs, who looks like he has the potential to become our best RB since the guy who was the reason I started supporting the Raiders, Marcus Allen.

Carr certainly is resilient in terms of staying injury free. A minor miracle when you consider the lack of pass protection afforded to him in the 2nd half of this season (which accounts for the number of fumbles and subsequently no doubt the level of vitriol aimed at him). He’s actually registered some of his best career figures this season. Unfortunately, one of the other better seasons was the last time we made the play-offs, and he snapped his ankle during the last game of the regular season. With Matt McGloin as his back-up that was the end of our chances! 😂

Watched last night's chargers vs steelers game.. very good watch... Brady is on tonight against a very ordinary New York, hopefully it's competitive, because it becomes a chore when it's so one sided

Sorry, missed this earlier. There's more than one name mentioned who is no longer at the Raiders, which points to some irresponsible elements in recruitment.

I agree with JackSomething's assessment of Carr, who will probably look back on his career with regret that he traded a chance of glory for dollars.

Ruggs turned out to be one more Raider signing who lacked off-field discipline, and it's likely cost him his career. I'd love to better understand the decision-making/influencers around draft time. Gruden, given his temperament, should have been nowhere near the process, but the Raider draft selections have been screwy for...Christ knows how long...so in all honesty it's difficult to be sure how much influence he had. But he's gone now, of course, and may be deemed too toxic to ever work again.

There's a game on at 21.30 on Sky Sports tonight, if anyone is interested, my two favourite teams are playing Green Bay vs Cleveland

Swansea City v Leeds United
