On this day thread

20th July 1969 - the Apollo 11 lunar module that lifted off with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on board landed on the surface of the moon. They remained in situ within the module for several hours before commencing their walk on the surface of the cheese planet. Michael Collins drew the short straw (or the long straw depending on how you look at it) and remained in the module and kept the engine running.

Those who love a conspiracy theory are not invited to reply to this.

The landing was indeed on 20th July, but the first step onto the moon was at 0.26 am on the 21st.( British time that is.)

When it happened I always used to insist that the first step was on 21st July as that is my birthday. 🎂

21st July 1884 - Lords opened its doors to Test Match cricket on this day in 1884 as England hosted Australia. The hosts went on to triumph by an innings and five runs. This was not the first ever test match though as both teams had contested the first ever Test Match seven years prior at the MCG.

2002 : The Biscuit Fire 🔥
The Biscuit Fire was a wildfire that scorched and burned almost a half million acres in Oregon’s beautiful Siskiyou National Forest started by lightning and was not completely contained until December 31st later that same year.

22nd July 2012 - Bradley 'Wiggo' Wiggins (since became Sir Bradley Wiggins) won the 99th Tour de France on this day. Wiggo is one main drivers behind the inspiration for millions of Brits to get out on their bike; he certainly played a part in my decision to compete in the Velothon of Wales events.
