How would you police it?On the matter raised by the OP, I've long been an advocate of the idea to dispense with road fund licence and simply tax every road user on a per mile basis. This makes it even Stephens for electric vehicles v ICEs and means that the more miles you drive, the more you contribute to maintaining the roads. If you choose to walk or take public transport then owners of petrol or diesel vehicles contribute less in the way of carbon emissions. The road fund licence money could be collected by adding a bit to the cost of petrol and diesel and the fuel companies remit back to the treasury.

Compulsory satellite tracking? All governments would be all over that. Another step towards big brother.This will have to be done by some sort of self assessment scheme, backed up with evidence provided through MOT, imposed annual validation, etc. This then raises the topic of mileage clocking fraud.

The idea of charging per mile has some merit, but those who live in rural areas where there is little or no public transport would be heavily penalised.
I have noticed that there’s a lot of purple trunking at the side of motorways these days, so maybe pay per mile isn’t out of the question but it’ll be a very unpopular move - possibly similar to the 20mph issue here.
Maybe increase the tax on EV’s so it’s a lot higher to balance out. The way technology is advancing, it won’t be long before domronr finds a hack to reset or “clock” the mileage on EV’s so I can’t see PPM being the answer.
