Ronaldo.

The Brazilian Ronaldo was much better IMHO

I would say Ronaldo as he has proved himself at more than one club, both Ronaldo and messi seem able to take being constantly fouled without getting many injuries , that's something any player claiming to be the best needs

For me, Ronaldo is the more impressive footballer physically and he works his socks off to be as good as he is, while Messi is the more naturally gifted footballer (not saying he doesn't work very hard mind).

If Ronaldo drags Man United to the title this season he'll have strengthened his case. Messi finally winning PSG the Champions League they've been trying to buy for years would strengthen his case, but then again he's playing alongside Neymar and Mbappé, so he has a much stronger supporting cast.

Always goes walkies in the big games though. Man utd v Barcelona CL final 2009 a prime example. Messi was insanely good that night.

He scored in the previous year's final though and from memory, Barcelona as a whole were insanely good that night, at the peak of their powers under Guardiola. That United team was very good and Barcelona just humbled them. Messi certainly outshone him that night.

Ronaldo's scored more goals in CL finals than anyone else and dragged an average Portugal side to the final of the Euros (although it needed a Swansea reject to win the final), so I'd say he's done alright in the big games!

He only turned up once in an El clasico when Madrid beat Barca at Camp Nou. Messi though loved an El Clasico and who can forget his genius in that hatrick he scored which is something Ronaldo has never done in an El Clasico.

No one on the planet could replicate this not eve Ronaldo

Woodman gifted him both goals today. On. A. Plate.

Bit harsh on the first one. There was a deflection off the Newcastle defender after he'd set himself for the ball.

The second was a classic Woodman gaffe. Frozen to his line in terrified indecision before ultimately letting a saveable shot in through his legs.

Which backs up my point that Messi is the more naturally talented footballer. Ronaldo is the hyper-competent and consistent machine, who can rarely be stopped even if he doesn't provide the incredible moments of genius we get from Messi. Which is why Ronaldo has all his records like most goals in all official senior competitions all time, most international hat-tricks, most goals in a CL season, most goals in the CL all-time, most international goals, etc.

Messi is the easy choice, the romantic choice and in all honesty I would pick him as the player I'd rather watch. But someone who is more interested in ruthless efficiency and results would probably be better off picking Ronaldo.

At the end of the day, they're both great players and clearly the greatest two players of the modern era, as we've already acknowledged that it's very difficult to compare all-time as football has changed so much.

Not even close anymore, Ronaldo is the the greatest footballer of modern times. His records, his trophy cabinet, his longevity...

Anyone that says differently, is probably intimidated by his good looks.

Fat Ronaldo isn't in the top three, may get a sniff at 4 or 5.

I respectfully disagree. One category of 'big games' is international matches in the World Cup or the European Cup / South America Cup, and Ronaldo's performances for Portugal outshine Messi's for Argentina. Renaldo was a game changer and Messi wasn't (in those tournaments). This is one of those debates that can never be decided, but is pleasant to have.

Fat Ronaldo won a World Cup remember, had bags more talent than CR.
I would rather a team player like Messi than a selfish tap in / penalty merchant player like CR who didn't do great at Juve.

CR wouldn't lace Ronaldinho's boots.

Don't believe the hype. Shits it in the big games always.

Ronaldo has never been in a World Cup Final. Both have won their respective continents major tournaments (Euro champs and Copa America).

Messi has 6 Ballon D'ors to CR's 5

Didn’t do great at Juve?

81 goals in 94 starts in Serie A of all leagues is sensational.

You're just being silly.

It's okay though, there are lots of people like you out there who have an irrational blind spot when it comes to Ronaldo. I was in the same camp once as well.

My feelings also. Comparisons to massively talented but ultimately underperforming players like Ronaldo (injuries) and Ronaldinho (lack of professionalism) undermines his argument and just shows he hates Ronaldo for some reason.

Understandable as he does tend to rub a lot of people the wrong way with the arrogance and the perceived belief he cares more about himself than the team, etc..

And if we want to talk about shitting it in the big games, Portugal had made one major tournament semi-final in their history before Ronaldo started playing for them. Since then, they've won the Euros, reached another Euros final, reached a World Cup semi-final and won a Nations League (although that hasn't been around long enough to know whether that's a significant achievement or not).

Pre Messi, Argentina had won 2 World Cups, reached 2 more finals and won 2 Copa Americas (plus another 12 South American Championships if you want to go way back), showing they have always been a more competitive international team historically than Portugal. With Messi, they've mostly specialised in 'shitting it in the big games', losing a World Cup final and 4 Copa America finals before finally winning it this year.

Combined with Ronaldo's Champions League record, that kind of destroys the argument about who 'shits it in the big games'.
