Swansea City v Nottingham Forest
The Emirates FA Cup 4th Round
The Liberty Stadium, Swansea

Saturday January 23rd 2021, 3pm Kick Off

View attachment FA Cup Logo.png

After the midweek postponement of the Swans game at Blackburn in midweek attention turns back to the Emirates FA Cup this weekend as we welcome Nottingham Forest to the Liberty Stadium for our 4th Round tie.

The Swans progressed to this stage of the competition with a 2-0 win at Stevenage less than two weeks ago whilst Forest will be in search of a second Welsh scalp in the competition having beaten Cardiff at the City Ground in Round 3.

The teams go into the game in the unusual position of knowing their 5th round opponents - the draw made on January 11th confirms that the winners of this tie will face either Cheltenham or Manchester City at home.

As ever on Planet Swans we will be building up to matchday with our usual pre-match features, highlights, previous meetings and also some Swans FA Cup moments of the past. Add to that we will have all the latest news and views from both camps ahead of the game which will be broadcast live on BBC Wales at 3pm.

The game will also be shown on BT Sport Extra 4

ROBINSON AND TRUNDLE SEND SWANS THROUGH

The JackArmy.net Match Report

It was a truly magnificent finish to a game in which Swansea were mainly second best against a competent and nice to watch Preston side - full evidence of their lofty position in the 1st Division.

Flynn made changes to the side held at home in disappointing fashion by Cheltenham last week - Michael Howard coming back in for Lenny Johnrose at the back with Andy Robinson also coming back into the side following his suspension. Kevin Nugent dropped to the bench to make way for him.

Freestone

S Jones O'Leary Iriekpen Howard

Martinez

Britton Robinson

Maylett Connolly

Trundle

Subs: Murphy, Thomas, Nugent, Coates, Hylton

The Swans almost had a dream start inside 20 seconds when Trundle was played in by Britton but his low shot was well saved by Gould in the Preston goal. Was the tone being set for the match as a whole? The truthful answer to that was no it wasn't as Preston started to show why they stand two divisions above the Swans with some lovely passing and movement to put some pressure on the home side. Izzy Iriekpen was guilty of sloppy play on more than one occasion but Kristian O'Leary - his partner at the back - was making some great mop up tackles to save any real embarrassment. Couple that with some good saves from Roger and Preston never really had a gilt edged chance to break down the Swansea defence in the first half. At the other end, Lee Trundle was ineffective and despite some good movement from Robinson and Britton, Gould was never under any real threat past that chance after 20 seconds.

Trundle saw himself booked - an incident which I think means he misses the visit of Torquay on the 7th February - for an off the ball challenge. Neither referee or linesman saw the incident but it was captured by the fourth official - what he saw was enough to warrant a yellow card. I suspect this was something to do with an incident that saw Trundle hit the deck clutching his face. Stuart Jones was another one in the wars having been cluttered late as he sheperded the ball out of play in front of the East Terrace.

Half time came and went with the sides locked at 0-0 and no changes made during the interval. Not that that lasted long as the (presumably) injured Jones was replaced by Hylton - Michael Howard moving to right back in a defensive re shuffle.

And it was in that position that we were exposed just before the hour mark as a ball into the near post was headed home by Etuhu who was unmarked. In reality it was what Preston deserved but it did wake the crowd up to really get behind the Swans who were left with just over half an hour to save their participation in this year's competition.

But as they battled an equaliser looked unlikely as Preston were first to many balls and Swansea not looking like getting a way past the defence. Only a defensive mix up provided half a chance but even then it was Preston who cleared their lines before the three Swans players could conjure up a shot between them.

Thomas replaced Connolly in a bid to try and make something happen but they had to wait until ten minutes from time for it to come their way. Leon Britton was brought down about ten yards outside the Preston area - a perfect position for Andy Robinson to make a strike at goal. And to be fair should Robinson hit ten from the same position he will be hard pushed to hit one better than this as it cleared the Preston wall and beat Gould as it smashed into the corner, and the back, of the net. Cue mayhem at the Vetch as over 9000 Swans fans celebrated an equaliser. Preston were on the ropes?

They did come back at us after Robinson went down midway into their half but as Izzy and Hylton between them broke up the Preston attack, Swansea ignored their man on the floor and built their attack. Trundle was forced to play the ball wide when, ironically, he would probably have passed to Robinson. Maylett crossed and Thomas jumped with the defender. The ball came off the defenders head straight upwards and as the Preston defence stood still, Lee Trundle chested the ball down and easily beat Gould from five yards. If Robinsons goal brought mayhem this one brought twice as much as the Swans, second best for long periods, were now eight minutes from the 5th round of the competition. Amusement followed the goal with Andy Robinson, prostrate for all of the move, jumping on the scorer Trundle before being taken off to be replaced by Coates.

There was time for one more chance but Roger was on hand again to deny our higher division opponents and the three minutes of stoppage time were played out without more drama before the final whistle that brought scenes rarely seen at the Vetch in this competition.

Preston will probably feel robbed slightly at this result and that is probably justified but that is the FA Cup - its one chance and forgetting the winner - it was Andy Robinson who took that chance today in what will without a doubt be one of the goals of this season's competition.

Special praise today for Kristian O'Leary who made some cracking challenges at the back and Roger for some saves that we have grown so appreciative of in 12 years at the Vetch. Add to that the performance of Michael Howard, Hylton, Jones and, after a nervous start, Izzy and you have them to thank for keeping us in the game.

It will be Trundle and Robinson who take the plaudits tonight but the play of the players at the back kept us in it - without them there would be no room for scoring heroes.

And so it is the last 16 of this season's competition and we await the draw again with trepidation but in all honestly will anyone relish a trip to the Vetch in the next round?

Swans manager Brian Flynn:

What we wanted to do all week was to try and put on a cracking Cup performance for the fans and we did that with a fairy-tale ending.

I said to the players at half- time that we are still in the game and should go for it by making chances, that is what happened.

There were some good saves by both keepers but it has turned out to be a day for us to remember.

Preston manager Craig Brown:

We played confidently for 80 minutes but should have wrapped the game up much earlier and we had a great chance to make it 2-0 to put the result beyond doubt.

The Swans FA Cup run ended at Tranmere where they lost 2-1 despite taking the lead through another Andy Robinson goal.

STEVE COOPER | WE WILL CONTINUE TO ADAPT AND LOOK FORWARD

Source: Swansea Official Site

Swansea City head coach Steve Cooper has backed his squad to take the reshuffling of their schedule in their stride as they look towards Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Nottingham Forest.

The Swans had been due to face Blackburn in the Championship on Tuesday, but a waterlogged pitch at Ewood Park ensured the game was postponed to be rearranged for a later date.

Swansea boss Cooper has often spoke of the need to be adaptable amidst this unusual season, with the fixture list more congested than usual as a result of the knock-on effect of last term’s suspension of football amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

And it is a quality his side have displayed in climbing to second in the table with the campaign just past its halfway point.

Meaning he has no doubt his players will be able to handle the unexpected change in their calendar.

“We have to adapt to it, the schedule will be rejigged to what we think is right for the next game and we will commit to it,” said Cooper.

“Our lads are good at taking things in their stride and not letting things bother them, and that will be the case here.

“We will have to go through the process ahead of Saturday, but we now have a cup game we want to commit to and win.

“The reality is this might not be the last game we have called off, so you cannot look back you have to look forward.”

Will Morris be able to play or will he be self-isolating for a while?

I live in deepest darkest Asia so have no idea what the British quarantine regulations involve ...

Had a quick look at Hourihane's appearances this season and don't think he is cup tied so imagine he will start along with Hamer

edit ...i forgot villa put the under 18s out against liverpool in the FA Cup

I like cup weekends ... the only time i don't feel stressed to buggery 2 hours before kick off .... hope we win and get another free hit against man city

Still salty about that Tranmere penalty 17 years later.

I wonder if any newbies will be around the match day squad on Saturday?

SUPER SWANS DUMP OUT THE HOLDERS

View attachment Dyer Pompey.jpg

Planet Swans Match Report

On loan from Portsmouth's arch rivals Southampton, Swansea's latest acquisition Nathan Dyer certainly was in no mood to let the hostile reaction from the Fratton Park faithful get to him. Latching onto a Jason Scotland through-ball the 21 year old coolly slotted the ball past David James in the Pompey goal to send the Swans into a deserved 1-0 lead.

Pompey Programme.jpg

Dominating the premier league side, the Hampshire side's only meaningful attempt on goal came trough England international Peter Crouch but the towering striker's shot failed to really trouble Dimi Konstantopoulos as the Greek shot-stopper was equal to his shot.

With the Fratton Park faithful rocked by Dyer's strike earlier in the half, Swansea did not let up and just before half time Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj brought down Jordi Gomez in the box and referee Andre Marriner without hesitation pointed to the spot. Continuing his rich vein of scoring form Scotland stepped up and slotted the ball past James to make it 2-0 to the visitors.

Half Time Score: Portsmouth 0-2 Swansea City

After the break Portsmouth started the brighter and put pressure on the Swansea defence and were unlucky not to put themselves back into the game after Crouch forced a fine save from Konstantopoulos. However it would be the 30 year old keeper that would cause Swans hearts to skip a beat after spilling the ball but Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu could not punish the mistake.

It would be a post that was to come to Swansea's rescue after Jermaine Pennant's 73rd minute corner found Peter Crouch in the box but the strikers header blazed off of the woodwork much to the relief of the sizable travelling Jack Army.

Gomez nearly put the game beyond doubt but his shot was saved by an imposing James in the pompy goal. Called into action again, Konstantopoulos produced another fine save to deny Pennant on loan from Liverpool.

Portsmouth simply had no answer to the persistent and resilient Swans as the Liberty Stadium club march on into the fifth round.

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez:

It wouldn't say it was a fluke, we were the better side over the 90 minutes

It was a great performance to the end because we had to hold our concentration and our focus.

To get the two-goal cushion was important.

The players have worked extremely hard and success in football doesn't come as an accident

(The win) was more than anything the positive feeling of being able to come to a Premier League environment and be ourselves.

That's what we were looking for and I'm delighted we've been able to do that because to say we've been the better side against a very good Portsmouth side, I think it tells you a lot about the performance.

"ou can see we are getting better and that's credit to everyone at Swansea City.

Portsmouth threw everything, they had nothing to lose, they had to chase the game and they've got a player who's been moving around in world football for £26m so you are going to expect them to get chances

But the way you defend, the way you make the decisions and the way you take the challenges, I couldn't be prouder of the players, and that's another clean sheet.

I thought they (the fans) were fantastic today from the first minute and they were our 12th man on the pitch.

Pompey 3.jpg

Portsmouth Manager Tony Adams:

I am so disappointed. I thought we were poor in the first half.

We were outclassed, outplayed and outfought and that's not good enough.

We were well prepared for the game, but maybe some of the guys were surprised by just how good Swansea were.

We changed the shape in the second half and tried to chase the game and their goalkeeper made some very good saves.

But I'm not using that as an excuse.

The Swans run in the FA Cup ended in the next round when they were knocked out by another Premier League club in Fulham after two closely fought games. In the first match at the Liberty, Jason Scotland's goal earned that replay but it was the performance of the Swans that gained all the plaudits including one BBC reporter (Alan Green) who said on Five Live after the game "I learned today that Swansea City are a very good side, please can we have them in the Premier League"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZLbel8AXKc

Scotland was on target again in the replay but the Swans were eventually beaten 2-1.

Portsmouth ended the season in 14th place in the Premier League whilst the Swans ended 8th in the Championship.
