Season 26/27

Always tough in the Championship but will be a lot easier if we can get the recruitment right. If we’re going for a Klopp system, we’ll need some pace out wide and a natural ball player at CB. I think our midfield as it is can work but we may need to add some goals if Walta isn’t fancied. Having Parker and hopefully Lissah will help to save us some money too. The big thing will be that forward line, we need at least one winger who can make an impact contributing goals and assists and a striker to replace Vip who will inevitably go.

I don’t think this is as big a task as it sounds because we do have a solid base to build from but if we mess it up we’ll be in trouble.

A positive pre season helps to set the tone. Last summer was not that despite the hype re the world class recruitment apparatus. Data driven recruitment might be good on paper but shite on grass. Just a thought.

Hopefully Vic has the right contacts in his address book.

Good call with fitness. Something alot of people have not mentioned. Our Pre Season was awful and by all account O Dea was poor with players and the fitness level was lacking. For me it's about getting a pre season getting levels up that means we can stay in matches longer and get players in who can contribute on other levels. Yes it's about staying in the league but this team needs to be looking at top 10. Every season is a difficult season, so I take that with slight pinch. We have to concentrate on ourselves and the rest will follow.
Our pre season was fine according to a lot of knowledgeable posters on here , and results didn't matter , the fact we created very little against teams in lower divisions should have been a wake up call then.

We have a LOT of players that are new to the division and/or not yet at their prime.
I expect a lot of improvement in this squad from players like Parker Galbraith Walta Innoussa Widdel Idah even Stamenic Vipotnik Ronald.
Some investment in productive wide players - and we can look forward to a step forward - and remember post Matos we are 6th in the form league over the past 24 games.
Cheer up you old buggers and always look on the bright side of life!

I really don’t think results matter in pre season friendlies. We usually change the entire team at half time so they don’t even resemble proper football matches.

Personally I think that’s fine for the “behind closed doors” friendlies but if clubs are charging a fee to watch them I think they should get something a bit more realistic for their money.

With all the sports science and medical input available to clubs now it’s inexcusable for players not to be fit enough at the start of a new season. Match fitness is another thing but proper pre season friendly matches could help if approached as competitive events.

Get 15m for Vipotnik, integrate Lissah, Parker and Congreve as squad players, invest in a left footed wide player and a central defender and make sure our finances are in order to spend more sustainably.

Many clubs can have poor pre season and go on to do well, but we was dreadful. Watched practically nearly everyone and as you said against lower teams. I have no worries about this pre season. Well fingers crossed.

In hindsight, it's definitely the fitness levels on show in preseason that should have set alarm bells ringing.

The hand-wringing about the results ignores that we started the season with 3 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats from the opening 8 games and were in 8th place in the table. Not to mention beating Notts Forest in the cup during that time.

It was the 1 win in 8 following that, including 5 defeats in a row, that was the real problem. If results in the preseason were that important, the early decent form wouldn't have happened. The fitness falling off a cliff after that initial run as a result of poor fitness training in preseason does fit though.

I don’t suppose we can afford to bring Ben Davies home?
Depends what he wants I guess.

If Spurs get relegated, I can see him staying there for another year, as they’ll want a handful of players who know what the Championship involves (appreciate Ben has never played there though).

Let's not forget, what this new sponsorship is going to be.
Not expecting much but the carrot was dangled a bit.

If Coventry, Ipswich and Saints go up with Leicester going down i think the Championship next season could be viable for a top 8 spot. Wolves will lose a lot of players, Burnley will be fairly strong and Spurs will have a kids team.

Coming up Lincoln Cardiff and possibly Bolton or Stockport will be no threat.
