Second Tier Football

An awful game.

The main thing I took from it is a reminder of how dreadful EFL refs sometimes are. And how they can determine outcomes. That ref has no control of the game at any point and then gave a scandalous penalty at the end. Reminded me of us at Burnley last season. Really poor decision to give him an opening game of that magnitude. Clearly wasn't up to it.
He wasn't, but the players really don't help themselves. Diving , whingeing, wasting time , the whole match was a dreadful advert for second tier football in the UK.

Players can sniff a weak ref. Once they clock he hasn't got control, that's when they start to take the piss. Ultimately it all stems back to his inability to get a grip on the game.

I remember a league cup game under Sousa against Scunthorpe. The ref that night was appalling, and in the end our players took matters in to their own hands, think we had two sent off. We weren't a dirty team, but he wasn't protecting us from them so we had to protect ourselves. Refs as bad as that are actually dangerous.

Normally first round league cup games are tepid affairs but that one really blew up and went wild in extra time! I think we actually had three sent off, mostly retaliating after the ref failed to protect us, and Dobbie was injured after being kicked in the ribs and had to stand on the side of the pitch to stop us going down to 6 players and having the game abandoned. Definitely one of the most ridiculous games I’ve been at!

We got kicked off the park that night and the ref lost the plot. One more off and he would have had to abandon it. We had a player down (Besian?) but had no subs left and the ref wouldn’t let us bring him off. It would have been the end of the ref’s career and Nigel Adkins was pretty much the worst example of a football manager that night.

Got offered a free ticket today to see Saints v Wrexham. Come and see your rivals he said 🙄

It was Besian who was injured and was forced to stay standing on the edge of the pitch by the terrified referee. The ref was Linington and it was up there with Atwell against Havant and Madley against Stoke for the worst refereeing performances I've ever seen in person.

I remember logging on PS after getting home and Phil asking me to write a summary as quite a few posters weren't at the game. In my memory I was pretty balanced (I think I criticised Rangel for the third red card as he was dull enough to lash out in response to something from a Scunthorpe player who obviously then went down as if he was shot), but I bet I was actually still steaming!

Under Martinez wasn’t it? And wasn’t it Linnington? I think he’s still around? A better referee now no doubt. I suppose they all have to learn. It ain’t easy, but come on, crack down hard early, tell them the next dangerous tackle walks, and book them when they try and intimidate you. Job done.

Or…if you really hate them, give a silly penalty in the 96th minute (‘doing a Madley”).

I will never forget it

2-2-2 at the end with Tatey up front, who at point during it all was sat on the hoarding talking to the fans

Monk sent off at the end, we'd used our subs and Dobbie went off injured, meaning we were down to 9

Rangel and Pintado off

Idrizaj unable to play, lays down on the side of the field

There is no way that game should have continued with an injured player on the field, Sousa should have just taken him off, the ref would have copped it, but in the end he got away with it somehow

Probably because the media were not paying attention to a lower league cup game, social media was present but nothing like the monster it is now

Unbelievable

Southampton offering nothing in the final third so far..

Wrexham using Windass well linking with Moore

Good veteran striker play by Moore there. He knew he was unlikely to score from that angle and with another defender coming across, so he slowed down and waited for the contact.

If I was the Soton boss I’d haul that moron off and send him down the tunnel to think about whether he wants to be a professional footballer.

Good to see the joy in the Wrexy end. We had our time, I remember the feeling, and I can’t begrudge another team rising from the depths feeling that elation.

This Saints side is a shadow of the side that hammered us home away a couple of seasons back.
