I know nothing of the demographics of the industry. Is it made up of an ageing workforce who will be happy to jump ship on the back of a package? I guess not.

Mixture from apprentice age right up to retirement age. My cousins been there two years, his wife is about to give birth to their first child. Extremely sad for people like that.

The other thing people need to realise is the amount of small businesses in the locality that depend on Tata, whether for direct supply or cafes and such like. Hopefully Port Talbot doesn’t end up like Ebbw Vale did after the steel works there closed.

The other thing people need to realise is the amount of small businesses in the locality that depend on Tata, whether for direct supply or cafes and such like. Hopefully Port Talbot doesn’t end up like Ebbw Vale did after the steel works there closed.

There will have to be some sort of regeneration plan. If there isn’t and the tens of millions that go into the local economy stop, then PT and surrounding communities could end up being bleak places.

Awful news, a tragedy for both Port Talbot and South Wales in general. The cupboard is almost bare as it is, there maybe some monies made available to help the community, but from what I've seen in past years regeneration projects are largely ineffective in boosting local economies. Available money is tight overall as it is in Wales, which means the budget for any regeneration projects for S. Wales in general, will have to be spread even more thinly, like I said it's a massive blow to the area and surrounding areas.

There was a regeneration plan in Ebbw Vale, that didn't work. Llanwern closed their heavy end, I was working there when that happened, don't know how that affected the local community there, but i will say that area was never pretty or had anything much to attract people there. I also know they built houses on part of the old plant.

Port Talbot is in a far better position in that respect, with their fantastic beach, Margam Park and such like, its also been designated a 'freeport' although nobody seems to know how it's going to benefit the area in reality. I am aware of a few projects trying to get off the ground such as recycling aviation fuel. We'll see as they say.

Dreadful news, it’s a massive blow not only to the staff directly employed by Tata but also the thousands who sub contract there. Steel production should be preserved as it’s essential in the national interest - there are certain things we just need to be able to make ourselves.

Done my time in British Steel , Corus then Tata to finish my career in Industy , got out at the height of the appalling issue of the Pension Plan , another story not to dwell on , Financial Advisors , vultures .

Days of following in your fathers footsteps , he worked there , a leg up to entry into that job , easy .

Driving past Aberavon RFC ground on the M4 , one eye on the speed cameras and my mph dial.
Look across at the Blasts realising that industry and Steel making are a part of my thoughts .

Port Talbot / Abbey will now become the best recyling plant in the UK , accepting worn out white goods throw outs , helping the enviroment of course , Carbon Steel is not needed any more .

Imports for rail tracks will now be the norm , jobs not needed in our manufacturing skills .

Really good luck to the satellite staff , contract cleaners , engineers , caterers and Transport drivers .

Some will applaud this news , for me a sad day .

It took a long time after the works closed in Ebbw for them to build new facilities on the old site. Now there's a modern leisure centre, Gwent College building, Aneurin Bevan hospital, other businesses and the cableway up to the town centre.

Of course most of the money for all that came from European Regeneration funds that won't be available to Port Talbot, so it looks bleak. I suppose it's fortunate for Ebbw Vale that they didn't vote overwhelmingly for Brexit until after all the money had been pumped in.
