The Swansea Way!!

And when it does work, the total is greater than the sum if it’s parts, we’re able to punch above our weight and overachieve and the fans are entertained by their heroes.
Potter had us on that path, as did Martin in my opinion. They just weren’t lucky enough to have a core of Ash, Leon, Rangel and Dyer.

I don’t think Martin did. He was close(ish), but never could quite get us right through the phases. It was all too slow and predictable. It was imitation football, but never quite the real thing.

But I agree with the crux of your argument- we can’t be ‘normal’ as we can’t splash out enough on game changing players. We have to get the best out of what we have. Duff was failing miserably at it; they didn’t look well drilled or comfortable in what was being asked of them (whatever that was - it wasn’t obvious). Martinez and Brendan were great at it. Potter too (except defensively), but he had more money to spend.

It can certainly happen again if we get the right manager, but equally as importantly the right set-up throughout the club to support him. I suspect that needs a change of ownership.

The problem is Andrew. We have a fanbase full of pessimists who couldn’t quite sit comfortably in that period when we were flying high. The amount of “Spanish waiter” posts at the time and general cynicism over a free flowing approach was palpable.

I know if we get the right fit and they’re given time to get the right personnel it will happen again. Maybe not to the levels we saw but it can happen again.

Pragmatic football is the past. It’s done you need to move forward. A football philosophy is important.

First para is spot on.

It's a very "Swansea" attitude, and by that I mean the area not the club per se. It's a very working class area, nothing wrong with that of course, but with it comes an inbuilt scepticism of anything fancy, a suspicion of anything a bit exotic. It's almost like a need to drag things down instead of looking up.

I think that sort of mindset holds the club back, I really do. I can think of a lot of fanbases who would not have gone as quietly as ours has over the last 6-7 years over what the Yanks have been doing. We've been far too forgiving, far too polite towards them.

You’re speaking my language. This is largely what I’m getting at in the thread on women pundits which I discuss the diction of Alex Scott. I’m then having my Swansea heritage questioned for the audacity to say that maybe someone should read an autocue without dropping Gs.

You’re onto something here, there’s a collective ‘that’ll do boy’ mentality in it. Please don’t get above your station.

It’s the sort of thinking that leads people into the grips of the Far right because they can’t abide something out of their comfort zone as you allude to with the “exotic” comment.

Your point about apathy is true as well. There’s a lot of that, the type of Welsh person who slags off the English to their mates or from the terraces but when in their company quivers and doffs the cap.

I love my hometown and my boyhood club but there’s elements that drive me nuts. Questioning this is considered contrary or controversial. When it needs scrutiny and questioning. That’s why Swansea has been on the decline for decades. It’s not just the team that needs shaking.

This is not in a literal sense.

This is more about a mindset which Andrew is referring to as well. There’s a defeatist mindset with many, a celebration of the average. A lack of belief that we can be strong.

The type of Welsh person that sits in a room and starts being self deprecating to the extreme. I’ve seen it myself and it winds me up. The jocks don’t have that mindset and that’s why they’re respected.

I want us to be strong not weak and I happen to believe Swansea can be an amazing place to visit not an ugly lovely town that is in permanent decline. We’ve got so much going for us but it’s perpetual moaning rather than action and if success comes it’s almost unnerving.

It’s an opinion you’re welcome to think I’m talking crap. But that’s what I think.
