John Lennon was assassinated in New York by Mark Chapman.

John Lennon’s apartment building where he was shot.

Took this a few years ago, the house of Lennon.

I was in a woodwork lesson in school when I found out. The moment is etched into my memory. They put two Beatles films in a row on the tv that night. Starting over had already been on the charts and was heading downwards. I think it went back up after this. I didn't really know much about the Beatles but the reaction to his passing was so huge one couldn't help but appreciate the gravity of the situation.

Starting Over went back up the charts and became the Christmas number 1.

I Had only watched Paul McCartneys reaction to Johns death not so long ago. Giving him the benefit of the doubt that he might have been caught off guard by the journalist, but he seemed quite unconcerned. They werent on the best of terms at that point.

Oh and on a side note my friend Sir Peter Blake told me that John Lennon chose Swansea’s Dylan Thomas to be on the cover of The Beatles LP Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Mark Chapman went on to have a decent sports presenting career too. It’s what John would have wanted I reckon.

How well do you know Peter Blake, Darran?
