It's disgusting that we don't have a humane process in place to manage this problem. It's more important to the a-holes in the cabinet to use these people as a political football to play to their base though, sadly.

An absolute tragedy and the French have blood on their hands. They state that over 60% of attempted crossings are intercepted and yet there’s a film crew on hand at a French beach filming whilst thirty migrants pile into a dinghy. It’s not only the French that are culpable and politics need to be put aside so that a European solution can be found.

I don’t think it’s fair to single out any particular country. These people are being failed every step of the way, from their governments at home, foreign actors meddling in their home countries, criminal traffickers, countries along their escape route using them as political pawns. Nobody comes out of this looking good.

France takes more in than us even if they’re keen to pass on those aiming for the UK. Or probably more accurately those who the traffickers have destined for the UK - I suspect the people don’t get much say where they end up. (But I know you know this; you’re certainly not the Daily Express type!).

We’ve got a whole host of international organisations that seem to be impotent in all of this as well. e.g. what’s the point of the UN, and the UNHCR especially, if they can’t hold countries to account over this human tragedy? We never hear anything about their role/efforts.

I find it truly remarkable that the authorities have not traced any of these traffickers. To me that would be the first port of call to stop these people entering the channel and putting their lives at risk.

Have a look at Newsnight tonight, they have been visiting the migrant camps in Calais. The French police have been taking all the possessions from the migrants including tents, slreeping bags and food....leaving them with nothing.

Both countries need to work together.

That’s why I said that we need a European solution. My point about the French is that they are the last land mass before the migrants get into their boats and whether they do enough to stop the launches is perhaps questionable.

Why should France stop them coming here?

How about we stop invading and bombing those peoples countries, and their homes? How about we stop arming whichever foreign militia is flavour of the month with our government? How about we keep our noses out of other countries business? We are reaping what we have sown.

The French have blood on their hands? Not for me they don't.

I agree with most of that but the French should be doing far more to stop desperate people killing themselves whatever has gone on in the past.
I said on Twitter weeks ago nobody should be crossing the channel in a dinghy at this time of the year.

The last tragedy that I read about involved an Iranian family; we’re not invading and bombing Tehran.

As for the French, they are vociferous in their statements regarding investment in channel patrols and then go and hide behind a statement of not being able to intervene once the boat is in the water. I expect things will change after today.

Well yes of course but especially at this time of year with rough seas and freezing water.
