I had a text from my mate in the US. He was worrying about how this Russia/NATO standoff would play out, and what about China? Would they use the distraction to occupy Taiwan.

"Uhm. Boris ate some cake".

I'm about as strategic as someone wiping dogshit on a car door handle but I assume Putin is playing the west, driving something of a wedge between NATO countries, some of whom are pretty reliant on Russia for natural gas etc.

But yeah, Boris ate cake.

Russia may have a point though. They've been invaded how many times in the last 100 odd years and lost tens of millions in WW2, so I can see why they would be apprehensive about having NATO troops on their border.

Why don't we agree to Ukraine not being part of NATO, in the same way that EU has refused to let Turkey join it?

Putin’s flexing his mighty muscles and holds all the cards.

If the West impose sanctions he will cut off our gas supplies. The West has been naively following a low carbon energy production policy and the cost is dependency on Putin’s Russia.

Onward comrades.

Russia is lovely, really!

Additionally the Ukraine as a sovereign nation has the right to associate with what/whoever it choses. Whilst the EU has refused Turkey currently it is not a perma ban.

Didn't Russia annex Crimea not that long ago? Where is the list of countries that NATO has invaded since it's formation? A quick search reveals only the military response to 9/11 and everything that has led from that. Whatever you think of that action, it clearly wasn't undertaken with an aim like Putin's, to gain territory.

Ukraine gave up one of the world’s largest nuclear arsenals in return for NATO protection against Russia. Like it not it is what we promised them.

Who are „we“ to agree that another sovereign State can’t do what they want to do Glyn?

Ukraine / Turkey can apply to join NATO / the EU. And NATO / the EU can then say no.

We're going to have negotiations to settle this. And it won't be unconditional surrender by either side, so what should the solution be?

I forgot to mention that I read somewherethat NATO wont accept nations that are in an armed conflict. Which was the reason Russia created the events in Georgia when they (Georgia) talked of turning to the EU and NATO membership. This NATO condition was possibly part of their (Russias) thinking with the Crimea and Donbas.

Russia will re-take the former Warsaw coutries piece by piece unless they are met with resolve.

Edit to give some clarity

Really strange that Russia receives so much support for their actions from people I know these days. Really odd. I don’t expect people to hate them but I don’t understand the support. People have forgotten that Putin is a murdering gangster?

A lot of world leaders are.

The UK's have been no different either.

While I'm not going to hold up the UK's leaders as paragons of virtue, I'd be fascinated to know which are known murdering gangsters?
