I get it you don't like Williams, which is your perogative, but your arguments are 100% factually incorrect.
If Williams was obsessed with stat padding as you claim how do you square that with the fact that our 1022 completed long balls are the most in the league? Even though only 52.8% of our long passes are accurate.
The truth is the polar opposite. Under Williams everything goes down the flanks, which is illustrated by the fact that we're 6th for final third touches but only 16th for touches in the opposition penalty area. We get the ball out wide but not enough where the damage is done.
The problem with Williams is that for far too long he's vacated the middle of the park, forcing low completion longer passes from Vigouroux, the CBs and Grimes. The key difference in the QPR and Luton games is that finally we had two passing options (mainly Tymon and Key) in front of the back 3, enabling us to build through the thirds. Finally, we had the opposition guessing how we were going to build out, short or long, and got the final third dominance that has been sadly lacking too often this season.
Against Portsmouth we regressed to the long ball crap and players well in advance of the CBs. This played a massive role in the opening goal, with Tymon, Naughton and Fulton all inside the opposition half when Cullen was dispossessed. From that point on the goal was inevitable, which should never be the case if you lose the ball on half way on the touchline.
There's plenty to criticise about Williams, but comparisons to Martin are lazy and ignorant. If Williams wants sustained success he needs to clearly understand that establishing control has to involve the short sided triangles, through the thirds a lot of the time. I'm not convinced he gets that.
