I thought his interview was positive, said mostly the right things (I have an issue with Martin being put in a list of Roberto, Brendan and Laudrup as he was as far away from those three as it’s possible to be, and that worries me a little as it smacks a bit of what should be said rather than actual thought) and just any sort of change is much needed.

We will have to see where we are in a few months. It’s reassuring that he has experienced contacts he can call on for advice. And in Leon and Joey he has two people, temporarily at least, that more than understand what is needed.

The timeline suggests that wasn’t the case. Hellberg came over for talks and then Middlesbrough hijacked it. And then we went in for Matos. That’s the way it seemed. I imagine it’s pretty common to have multiple options up your sleeve for managers and players, so it’s no issue either way. The only people who could prove it are the board and they wouldn’t do that now because it would undermine Matos.

When a manager is sacked it is normal for a club to announce that Joe Bloggs has been put in charge until a replacement has been appointed.
We didn't do that because we clearly thought that Hellberg would be in place comfortably before the Bristol game.
