5 more points to beat last seasons record. I guess that's best we could hope for with the lack of quality in our squad and managerial turbulence this season.

I've pasted our results below for every season post-Cooper. This season so far it's:

42 16 9 17 50 54 -4 57 14th R3 R4

We've been a middle of the pack Championship team for quite a while now, nothing particularly unusual about this season. Fingers crossed Matos having a pre-season with the players and some astute transfers in/out this summer will make the difference.

We've done well when you consider we gave everyone else half a seasons head start.

Not sure what the 3 point prediction is based on?

You have to be horrendously bad to lose 6 of the last 7 games in an EFL season with so many teams either with nothing to play for or struggling under pressure at either end of the table.

Nothing we’ve seen in the last 4 months suggests we’re a horrendously bad team. I doubt we’ll match the previous PPG in Matos’ reign but I’d also be amazed if we didn’t pick up 7-10 points in the remaining games.
5 points from the first three games, so I may well have undershot here. 6 or 7 more and I think we’ll end in the top 10.

I see us getting 5 points out of 12 for next few games. Will most likely lose against Southampton, but see a Draw with QPR and Norwich and Win against Charlton. Target has to be 10th spot.

Bar 2 miraculous end of the season runs by Sheehan and Martin we have basically been a ≈16th placed championship team for the last 5 seasons.

That's why it genuinely amazes me everytime people say we only need 1 or 2 more signings to be a top 6 team. When in reality we probably need triple that.

Before I get carried away with Matos's run of form since taking over I will remind myself of Sheehan's form since taking over last season which was basically top 2 form and at complete odds with our run of results this season before he was sacked.

30 years following the Swans has taught me to keep a healthy dose of pessimism close at hand :D

We’ve been getting 1.5pts a game under Matos pretty consistently. Bar Sheehans caretaker stints that’s the best performance of a permanent manager since Cooper. It’s enough for 70 points in a season which is not far off the play offs at all. It definitely means we don’t need half a new starting 11 to get there.

I understand your point but does it matter when the wins come? If we’d been top at Xmas but then fallen away in those seasons it doesn’t make us a top 2 side. You are what you finish at the end of the season, and we’ve been a mid-table side (never finished 16th or lower) over the last 4 seasons.

The playoffs going to 8th next season shows how close we are. Obviously other teams will improve over the summer and I’d be amazed if the 3 that come down aren’t far more consistent than the 3 this season. However, the 3 that come up will be weaker than Wrexham and Birmingham, so swings and roundabouts.

No doubt there’ll be 16-18 sides that fancy their chances of making that top 8 in August and there’s no reason with a couple of quality additions to the first XI why we can’t be in that mix.

Just goes to show you how bad Potter was here. Some teams bounce straight back up, he never even got us close to the play offs.
In his defense he inherited a squad with a huge amount of churn and was denied the ability to use the best players in the squad who were shipped off on loan to save on wages.

If he had been given Ayew to work with like Cooper did then I believe he would have also made the playoffs. Ayew on one wing, Celina through the middle and James on the other with McBurnie up top? That would have been a serious attacking lineup

I find it interesting how our fans opinions of Potter vary so much. I rate him quite highly, more for what he did with Brighton than down here admittedly. People will say “he failed at Chelsea and West Ham” but both those clubs are proving to be basket cases in their own rights.

He probably underachieved here a little and looking back on it, that summers recruitment was pretty underwhelming. I hear people say that he should have gotten us promoted with the squad he had but with all the upheaval and the financial “black hole” that existed, I think he did well to stabilise things. A few of those players were playing their first seasons in men’s professional football too so I think it’s a bit much to say we should have gone back up at the first time of asking. Play-offs that season was achievable though 100%.

I’m in this boat too. His biggest mistake IMO was the chopping and changing between goalkeepers which probably cost us 5-10 points.

Suggesting a team that was based largely around 6/7 players that had little to no experience of senior football ‘should have’ made the playoffs is rewriting history based on the players they became.
