It has been just over twelve months since Flynn Downes left Swansea for West Ham but it seems as if the Hammers are prepared to let him leave on loan this season with him seemingly being offered to Southampton on loan as part of a deal for James Ward-Prowse. However, reports this morning suggest that...

I thought I read a report yesterday that Downes wants to stay at West Ham to fight for his place rather than go on loan. He'll be Martin's first choice as a loan signing before signing Grimes I reckon, will also be able to offer a bigger package than what we could.

Can't see it sadly. Alot of people think we are stacked in the midfield, but unless Duff feels Abdulai or Cotterill (who is more attacking anyway I think) are ready, we need reinforcements, can't rely on Allen and Walsh, be interesting to see if any of those two make the game tonight.

Would prefer as a permanent signing but could we afford him, would he want to come back, not having worked with the manager, would he want to go to Soton having worked with the manager.
If the Ward-Prowse merry go round means Grimes leaves, wouldn't be unduly upset, sure there are better players out there or hopefully within our ranks.

If they owe us money on Downes which they probably do then we could be in a good position to get him back if he fancies it, but I think he’d rather go with Martin & Gill.

I think we probably need that money. Flynn got a big pay rise going to the PL so he's surely out of our price range now. West Ham will use him in their squad now Rice has gone, or as a makeweight in their pursuit of Ward-Prowse (if he's willing to leave so easily).

Duff seems to be playing one sitting midfielder and two box to box so I do think we're stacked. Grimes, Fulton and Ntcham as senior options. Allen, Walsh, Cooper, Paterson and the academy group as backups. It's by far our most well-covered position.

It would be a surprising move unless we make a considerable (£10m+) wedge on Grimes, which given that the only alleged interest is coming from Southampton is highly unlikely. Maybe even if we did the club would prefer to try and find the next Downes rather than spend loads on the current one.

Another injury to Walsh and a serious offer for the short contracted Ntcham might change our midfield situation quite rapidly though so I'd expect us to have some options researched already.

Hopefully if we sell Piroe for a decent fee we can take a harder line on Grimes and hold out for a bigger fee if Martin really wants him. He's got 2 years left on his contract, so we're in a stronger position.

Couldn’t afford him and I doubt he’d be interested in our ‘project’ (whatever the eff it is).
