I watched The Dog House on Channel 4 the other night. Some poor old fella had to take his dog to rescue because the dog suffered with severe anxiety and the owner couldn’t cope. It was heartbreaking. Thankfully the dog was rehomed and was happy. They didn’t go back to the previous owner but I’d imagine the poor old bugger is still suffering from guilt.
Have you watched the program Dogs Behaving Badly the fella does wonders with dogs not saying his methods would work with NJ's dog, but he does seem very good.

Same effect as when he hears fireworks, thunder, rain on the windows, emergency vehicle sirens…

He can’t catch his breath, runs into every room, looking for somewhere to hide, and when he realises he can’t get away from it he tries digging through the floors, to get away from the noise.
That's grim.

Ours gets into a terrible state each time the smoke alarm battery warning starts chirping. It's pathetic to see her. Thankfully it's an infrequent occurrence.

I don't really know what I'm talking about here, but I've heard folks talking about thunder jackets (a sort of compression coat that makes dogs feel secure), and also playing white noise. I wonder if either of those would give your dog any relief?

I haven’t tried that no, but tried similar and any number of other ‘remedies’ as well. Vet recommended loads of things over the years but nothing works.

Only thing I haven’t tried is one of those dog behaviour people, but I don’t know anyone who can recommend one. The vet seems to think that it would be a waste of money though.

Fraud sadly

They get dog trainers to come on location and tell him what to say/do, or even do the training themselves

Impressive. He must be a heck of a shot to pick off the dog with a shotgun without injuring the people it was attacking.

Pity, thinking about it, that the owner didn't catch at least a few pellets.
