Tate had to sit out last weekend’s draw with Doncaster due to suspension but he should return on Friday night to take his place in the defence as the Swans look for the victory that will draw them level with Cardiff in 2nd place.

But drawing level with their rivals is not the main thing on Tate’s mind “I don’t think there would be too much significance at the minute if we pull level with Cardiff,” he told the Western Mail. “But taking three points off Portsmouth is important and so all we can think about is trying to win a tough game and then see what happens elsewhere.

“We’re doing OK at the moment, but that’s all you can say – it’s only November and there’s a long way to go.

“But we’re enjoying it and for me it’s a real pleasure to be part of it.

“After missing out on a play-off place in the last two years, we’ve come to terms with the pressures involved and our experience will hopefully help us stay up in those top few places.

“Everyone knows how much I love this place and it would be great to be part of another promotion, but I’m not thinking any further than the next game.

“We’ve always had a great atmosphere for Friday night games at the Liberty.

“There’s a different feeling to it under the lights, especially if we are doing well.

“It also allows all the local lads who play football on a Saturday afternoon to come along and support us.

“I hope we have a decent crowd on Friday because it does make a difference to the players on the pitch.

“The players deserve it as well. We are third in the league, playing some good football, certainly more attacking than last season, and I think the fans appreciate it.

“We are value for money, even though I still believe there are more goals in us.”
