Transfer activity imminent? Just over a week to go until window closure

For many people the month of January seems to drag on forever.ย  It is often joked that the month has hundreds of days as the period for many between a likely early Christmas pay day and the traditional January one seems to drag on for an eternity

For football clubs it is the month where they get the chance in the middle of the season to make the adjustments on their squad that have been evident in the first half of the season so that they are better prepared for the second half of the season.

It is also the month where it was well reported that the Swans failed to sign a single player this time last year and with just over a week to go this time around we are in exactly the same position as it stands.

Of course there were the reports last week of the failed bid for Romaine Mundle and the speculation that a second bid would be happening.ย  ย As it stands no second bid has been confirmed but with Luke Williams now several weeks into his tenure at Swansea he will be having his say on what is required.

There was much excitement on Twitter on Sunday that we could be in for former striker Oli McBurnie in this window – speculation that started on the forum last Tuesday but also speculation that could almost be quelled as McBurnie scored a stoppage time equaliser for Sheffield United just as the rumours were gathering further pace.ย  ย With a reported salary over ยฃ1m per annum it would be almost inconceivable that we would sign him without creationg further challenges for us financially on many levels.ย  ย This is the kind of things the transfer window can throw out especially when it’s much quieter than normal in terms of speculation.

Another linked target in this window Corey-Blackett Taylor signed yesterday for Derby.ย  ย The Swans interest in the player appeared to not go beyond that – just interest – but it sparked further discussion yesterday as to whether he could have added something to our squad.ย  ย As a winger in a squad that has a severe lack of quality width then you would say that about many wingers.ย  ย Either way he is now a Ram so there will be nothing further in that speculation.

So where does that need the Swans in the next week.ย  ย There is a definite feeling that players are being worked on and that the club are confident of landing at least two targets before the window closes.ย  ย Words that we have heard before and again read in the matchday programme last weekend when Andy Coleman wrote “We are actively in touch with clubs and players and we will be ready to act when we can bring in a player that will make us stronger.”

They were words echoed in the same publication by Luke Williams “”I can promise you there is plenty of work going on behind the scenes, and ultimately the aim has to be to make sure that anyone we bring to this football club is going to come in and make an immediate difference, as well as being able to grow and develop further in their time here.”

So with a week to go we await the news of who will be arriving before the window is closed.ย  ย Mundle appears to be the obvious answer but, as we saw in the summer (remember the signing of Big Mick?) names can come out of the blue where there has been very little speculation in advance.ย  ย Is that to be the case in the last few days of the window?

Time will, as ever, tell…. over to you Swansea City.

I don't know why Williams said that. Just setting themselves up for a fall again. Leave it to the Yanks to peddle such tropes.

I notice that the window this year shuts at 11pm February 1st (a week Thursday) and not January 31st.

Been watching the Swans since the very late 1970s and running the Planet Swans website (in all its current and previous guises since the summer of 2001 As it stood JackArmy.net was right at the forefront of some of the activity against Tony Petty back in 2001, breaking many of the stories of the day as fans stood against the actions where the local media failed.
